This week I pulled together five funding, prize and scholarship opportunities across oceans, climate, sustainability and conservation.

There’s a pretty wide range here — from student scholarships to startup commercialization funding to major collaborative ocean innovation projects.

A few worth checking out:

🌊 @oceanstartup — up to $25,000 for eligible Canadian ocean startups working toward pilots, demonstrations, deployment and commercialization.

💰 @canadaosc — support for collaborative ocean innovation projects, including sustainable seafood, ocean energy, transportation and climate solutions.

🚀 @innovate_bc — funding for B.C.-based companies working through commercialization and investment-readiness barriers, including marine and port operations.

🌎 @cep_mit — more than US$100,000 in prize funding for student-led climate and energy startups from around the world.

🌱 @trca_hq — three $2,000 B. Harper Bull Scholarships for post-secondary students studying in fields connected to conservation and cultural heritage.

Today while watching Octonauts with my son, there was an episode on tongue lice.

It was an excellent chance to ruin my son and partner’s day by explaining to them what a tongue louse is and how it makes a living.

I think everyone needs to know what a tongue louse is and see a picture of one at least once in their life 🤣 by @evan.frontier

🌊 In a previous life I worked as a fisheries biologist at the Lake Ontario Management Unit helping collect and analyze data on the salmon populations in Lake Ontario. 🎣   I still remember the first time I saw the salmon run in Port Hope.   I could not believe my eyes.  I revisit the story of Lake Ontario’s Chinook salmon and try to let awe, wonder and the complex relationship we have with salmon come through.

This past weekend at the @turkeyvulturefestival in @exploreporthope a grisly sight unfolded.. 🤣

A gaggle of Canada Geese were gathered in the Ganaraska River, feasting on the remains of dead salmon.

Wait… geese eat fish!?

Apparently, sometimes! Canada Geese are overwhelmingly herbivores, but they’re also opportunistic feeders and will occasionally eat animal matter when the opportunity presents itself.

And with the annual salmon run coming to an end, there was certainly no shortage of opportunity.

Nature is metal @natureismetal. 😂
