Our new documentary is out! “Shoreline Sentinels of Great Salt Lake,” directed by @evanbarrientosphotography, follows Audubon and @tracyaviaryofficial staff and volunteers as they embark on a journey to study how people recreating is impacting Snowy Plovers nesting at Great Salt Lake.

The shore of Great Salt Lake in Utah is a critical breeding area for western Snowy Plovers—spunky ground-nesting birds—but their nesting area overlaps with the most heavily used part of the lake. In 2023, Audubon and Tracy Aviary set out to learn how that overlap is impacting them and to create management recommendations to protect these beloved birds.

Bringing little birds to a BIG screen! Last weekend @bendfilmfestival screened “Shoreline Sentinels of Great Salt Lake” twice before @thelakedoc. It was amazing to convey the gravity of Great Salt Lake’s situation and highlight its importance to birds in a movie theater. Thank you to @bendfilm and @tinpantheater for the opportunity and to everyone who attended the screenings! And stay tuned, the film comes out on @audubonsociety's YouTube channel this Friday!

There were a whole bunch of these Celastrina butterflies on top of Dismal Falls earlier this month, sipping some kind of mineral from the rock.

I usually avoid photographing tourist destinations, but last year on a trip to Yellowstone, I thought I’d try photographing the ways tourists interact with this extremely unique landscape. I have very mixed feelings about national parks, and I think these photos reflect that.

Three final photos from the amazing Dense Blazingstar field near me in Jefferson National Forest. So far, this meadow has been unlike any other I've found in Virginia. Although I photographed one Eastern Tiger Swallowtail there, there were far fewer insects than I would've expected for so many flowers.

I believe this is Mentzelia multiflora, but correct me if I'm wrong. It only bloomed in my yard the first year of my restoration. Hoping it'll show up again one day.

Rocky Mountain Bee Plant (Cleome serrulata) is beautiful native that colonizes disturbed sites. They dominated my yard prairie in the first year and attracted hordes of bees. Each year since there have been fewer and fewer, but whenever I seed a new section, they do their job and hold the ground until the more conservative plants come in.

Soapstone Prairie, one of Colorado's greatest blessings. It can be hard to convince yourself to go there at this time of year, when it's brown and hot. But at sunset and sunrise, the prairie transforms into ripples of gold. I found my first Greater Short-horned Lizard at Soapstone the day I took these pictures, after years of looking. Another sign of the excellent prairie quality there.

Releasing a film is such a joy. You spend years working with hardly anything to show, and then suddenly, it’s out in the world. Last May, @audubonsociety and @tracyaviaryofficial premiered my newest film, “Shoreline Sentinels of Great Salt Lake” in Salt Lake City. The film introduces viewers to the Snowy Plovers who nest at Great Salt Lake through the eyes of passionate conservationists studying them. I made the film for Audubon to help reduce nesting disturbance on this busy shore. A key strategy for doing that is offering the film to groups that want to screen it in communities around Great Salt Lake. So far, we’ve had another 11 screenings held or requested. Thank you to those organizers!

If you would like to host a screening, please submit a request or learn more about the film at the link in bio. Thanks for considering!
