Before moving to Nashville in summer 2008, I came to a few of the weekly Sunday jam sessions at Cafe Coco hosted by Ben Graves. The excellent playing and community that I met were the major factor in deciding to pack up my car after completing my Purchase College degree and taking the 900 mile life plunge. After some time in town, I occasionally hosted that Cafe Coco jam, which led to hosting the monthly Nashville Jazz Workshop Jam Session starting in 2010. We came up with a collaborative format, featuring a special guest each month as well as an original tune written for the guest. Some of those tunes became the material for my first record as a leader, Falling Up. We had a lot of good times at the old Neuhoff space. For eleven years we would hang on a Sunday afternoon and have a constructive space for much of Nashville's improvising music community to commune. I can think of so many colleagues whom I first got to know through the jam and with whom I still get to work with today.The 2020 shutdown, changes in NJW direction, and life (touring, kids, etc) took that jam down. But these many paths have all lead to today, which brings me to a fun announcement. As of August 9th, the monthly Nashville Jazz Workshop Jam Session is back! As the Eric Church Free the Machine tour comes to an end, I wanted to take a moment to talk about some of my friends. The ECB choir, aka 'Things' (just like us horns).This group is of the highest level of professionalism. Day after day I've seen the choir hold extra rehearsals as we navigate the musical curveballs of new tunes and arrangements each weekend. Night after night they give their all, dancing another 12000 steps (🥵) on stage while delivering vocally. I do not take it lightly that they give me goosebumps every night when they sing together. Close your eyes and their sound is of 20+ people, but somehow they are just eight. Best of all these choir members are all tremendous people. They take great care of each other and all of us in the band and crew, making green rooms, buses, hotels, and of course the stage a welcoming and joyful atmosphere. We have shared so many laughs, a few tears, plenty of sweat (not naming names 🤣) , meals, drinks, and stories. I'm honored to call each of the eight of them my friend. Come cheer us all on these last two nights in Jacksonville and Tampa. by @evancobbjazz

𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲This week’s cover features 𝐀𝐂𝐄 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐬.Roy Agee, Evan Cobb, and Emmanuel Echem have spent years touring and playing together as a horn section on major stages around the world. What makes ACE Horns special is getting to hear their original music. All three are prolific composers with distinct voices, rooted in deep musical taste. They can move through any style with ease, but it is the writing and restraint that makes this project stand out. If you missed their Silk Sonic tribute, this is your chance to hear what they sound like when it is fully their own.Emmanuel Echem performed all original music at Nashville Jazz Fest this year. Roy Agee is one of our longtime favorites and yes, he played with Prince. Evan Cobb’s sense of balance and musicality ties it all together. Seeing these three play their own material in an intimate space is always worth your time.This week is also bittersweet as we say goodbye to Sunday Night Soul. There is too much to say to do it justice here, but @jasoneskridge and Sunday Night Soul are what introduced us to the best musicians in Nashville and the community that surrounds them. You can honor Jason on Saturday at Analog, and show up for Sunday’s finale featuring Dynamo, a fitting and explosive send off.We also made a special slide for 𝐒𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐚 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐧, who has two chances to be heard this week. Thursday at Urban Cowboy as part of the Nashville Women in Jazz residency, and Saturday at Rudy’s with a tribute to women composers in jazz. Rudy’s is heavily featured this week because it is showcasing serious players and original music, and we are excited to hear the owners are working toward opening another venue.As always, send your shows by Friday to be featured. Muse has been a little behind the scenes lately, but we have exciting growth planned for 2026. Feeling extra grateful on the road with Eric Church and the #FreetheMachineTourAs a woodwind doubler, it's always a be little scary watching my flutes sit on stage for an hour (🤞🏻) before I finally pick them up - the stage lights, the hockey arena temperatures, the waiting game...😅 But every night, they hold up beautifully and respond like a dream. Huge love and gratitude to @flutefixer at Altus Flutes for the 907, @johnrsax at Jupiter Band Instruments for the 1100E alto flute, and Jeremiah True at Tomasi Flutes for the MicroCork Flute Pickup.
