Can You Make a Hurricane? at Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2026, presented at the Halles de Schaerbeek, Brussels. @kunstenfestivaldesarts @halles.be"In recent years, artist Emmanuel Van der Auwera has investigated active shooter drills in the United States. Law enforcement reconstructs full-scale sets, and companies sell training programmes designed to teach people how to survive mass casualty events. Every element flirts with the codes of theatre—the “reality-based” sets and scripts, the make-up of participants playing the wounded. For years, Van der Auwera conducted interviews with drill participants, trainers, and conspiracy theorists, many of whom claim that mass shootings never happened but were staged as part of an attempt to increase gun control.Through a skilfully minimalist composition, Can You Make a Hurricane? ventures into the construction of the conspiracist narrative, weaving real dialogues with live cinema and found footage. Exhibition views – Saturn – at CAP, Centre for Contemporary Art of Saint-Fons (Lyon), France @lecapcentredart SOLO EXHIBITION From 20 September to 29 November 2025 "In Saturn, Emmanuel Van der Auwera presents a set of recent works and new productions. Through his sculptures and filmic devices, he explores the mechanisms of fabrication and circulation of images and information, as well as the way media events are represented in the era of post-truth and artificial intelligence. The double installation presented at the Centre d’Art fits into the continuity of his research on the visual language of the media, on disinformation and conspiratorial narratives. His raw material comes from mass media, from fake news, from the visual and informational manipulation. Emmanuel Van der Auwera appropriates this language, deconstructs it and recomposes it in order to reveal its hidden mechanisms. Inspired by a tragic event whose mediation took on an intense amplitude, the artist makes it a universal example, the revealer of the upheavals at work in our way of receiving and interpreting information. "The Gospel" — An exhibition featuring Omer Fast, Max Pinckers, and Emmanuel Van der Auwera12 April - 31 May 2025 @harlan_levey_projects@maxpinckers #omerfast"The Gospel" gathers works by Omer Fast, Max Pinckers, and Emmanuel Van der Auwera, exploring the increasingly blurred boundaries between fact and fiction. Each approach this theme from their own perspective: Fast reflects on the act of storytelling, from the strange impact of trauma on memory to techniques of media manipulation; Pinckers reveals the subjective side of documentary photography, capturing staged, cinematic images and researching almost-true stories; Van der Auwera evokes “kill chain” technology, rare earth mining, and virtual companionship, addressing the real impact of AI through layers of formal distortion. Together, the three artists offer complementary lines of questioning on a topic which is evasive, and encroaching further every day on all aspects of life. Emmanuel Van der Auwera's new series, X (A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words), uses found content and commercial printing techniques to explore an unfolding relationship between image, narrative, and disinformation. The selected images are screenshots from X (Twitter), capturing early incursions of AI-generated images into mainstream online spaces. Hung in the exhibition like a feed on one’s phone, scrolling through this collection provides a “greatest hits” of fake news that recently shaped social conversation. Glad to be showing new work at Art Brussels. @harlan_levey_projects @artbrussels Booth 5C-41 In conjunction with the gallery exhibition, Harlan Levey Projects will showcase a solo booth featuring Emmanuel Van der Auwera’s latest works at Art Brussels. Highlights include the new VideoSculpture Medusa 12.14.12 and the final pieces from his Memento series. These works are part of an ongoing project reflecting on the misinformation surrounding the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting. Van der Auwera investigates the aftermath of this tragedy, dissecting the conspiracies it sparked as early indicators of the shift into our post-truth era.VideoSculpture, “Medusa 12.14.12”, takes its title from the date of the shooting but focuses on the aftermath: how images, grief, and reality itself became weaponized. “Medusa 12.14.12” engages directly with the visual tactics of online conspiracy theorists, analyzing the construction of these narratives, and offering a visual metaphor for how images are picked apart, shared, and warped into new—and often dangerous—versions of truth.Emmanuel Van der Auwera’s film White Cloud (2024) will be screened at 'The Screen' on Saturday, April 26, at 12:30. Fragments of a tragedy 📹Recently joining the #KADISTcollection, ‘The Death of K9 Cigo’ by Emmanuel van der Auwera pieces together a raw, unsettling portrait of societal violence in the U.S.Using self-deleting live streams from Periscope, the film explores how digital spaces preserve trauma long after news cycles move on.Following a devastating event in 2018, van der Auwera documented public reactions, revealing stark contrasts in collective mourning—where the loss of a police dog received a spectacular ceremony toward the end of the year that started with the shooting at the School. Through found footage and digital surveillance, the artist questions how mass media constructs narratives, restoring a human perspective to events often reduced to statistics. Glad that VideoSculpture XXV (Archons) is travelling to @kunsthalcharlottenborg in Denmark.Poetics of Encryption28 sep – 12 jan 2025Kunsthal Charlottenborg presents this year’s major group exhibition in close collaboration with KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin.@kwinstitutefcontemporaryartPoetics of Encryption explores the dark side of tech, bringing together 38 international artists. Installed in Kunsthal Charlottenborg’s grand south wing, the exhibition spans analogue and digital media featuring historic and newly commissioned works.Though we rely on digital tools for many things, we rarely understand how they work. Moreover, due to the proprietary nature of much corporate tech, even the most curious among us cannot gain deeper insight. Today, we are forced to come to terms with our relative lack of power in the face of inscrutable systems. What symptoms of this personal and political drama register in the cultural field? What moods, symbols, or narrative frames capture the aesthetics and politics of exclusion, occlusion, secrecy, and speculation concerning technology’s inside?The exhibition is curated by Nadim Samman, @nadim.samman the author of the recent book titled Poetics of Encryption. Art and the Technocene. It surveys an imaginative landscape marked by ‘Black Sites’, ‘Black Boxes’, and ‘Black Holes’ — terms that indicate how technical systems capture users, how they work in stealth, and how they distort cultural space-time.
