It only took me 25 years to realize this. But I’m thankful that I was able to have this lightbulb moment before “retirement” and forking over over 50% of my wages to Ottawa & Victoria 🥲 by @evangilbert101

The image depicts a common financial meme comparing two lifestyles or archetypes: “The one who pretends to be rich” versus “The one who pretends to be broke.”

Here is the breakdown of the humor and visual irony presented in each panel:

1. The one who pretends to be rich

• The Irony: This person spends aggressively on visible status symbols to present an image of extreme wealth, but does so through unsustainable debt.

• Key Elements:
• A flashy, high-end sports car (Porsche 911).
• A luxury watch labelled “rolex bought on credit”.
• High-fashion accessories (Louis Vuitton belt).
• Expensive champagne on ice.

2. The one who pretends to be broke

• The Irony: This person avoids lifestyle creep, opting for humble everyday items despite having immense personal wealth.

This meme references “War Plan Red,” a strategic contingency plan developed by the United States military in the late 1920s and early 1930s detailing a hypothetical invasion of Canada.

The top half of the meme features a map adapted from Kevin Lippert’s book War Plan Red, which outlines how the U.S. military proposed capturing key Canadian infrastructure, ports, and rail lines.

The bottom panel pairs a shocked Canadian flag with a smug American flag using characters from the animated film Bee Movie.

🇨🇦 Fact-checking Canadian Food Inventions! 🍁

Here’s the truth behind the viral list…

✅ 100% True:

• Hawaiian Pizza: Created in Chatham, ON (1962).
• The Caesar: Mixed up first in Calgary, AB (1969).
• California Rolls: Invented in Vancouver, BC (1971) by Chef Hidekazu Tojo.
• Poutine: Born in rural Quebec in the late 1950s.

❌ Not Quite/Misleading:

• Peanut Butter: A Montrealer patented a peanut paste in 1884, but modern spreadable peanut butter was commercialized in the US.
• Ginger Ale: Canada Dry was perfected in Toronto (1904), but ginger ale itself was invented in Ireland in the 1850s.
• Maple Syrup: Perfected by Indigenous peoples across eastern North America long before Quebec was established.

The shared chart illustrates the widening housing affordability gap in the United States by comparing real estate values and household earnings from two different eras:

📊 The Price-to-Income Shift

• 1985 (Baby Boomers): The median home cost $83,200 while the median household income sat at $23,620. This means a house cost roughly 3.5 times the average annual household earnings.

• 2022 (Millennials): The median home cost skyrocketed to $468,000 while the median household income only reached $74,580. Under these conditions, a home cost roughly 6.3 times the average annual income.

While the raw numbers accurately showcase how much faster property values have outpaced wages, financial analysts note that this chart omits a critical piece of the structural math: mortgage interest rates.

Ultimately, even when accounting for the higher interest rates of the 1980s, modern buyers still require significantly more years of saving to accumulate a standard down payment due to how drastically home prices outran baseline wage growth.
