🍰 WEGMANS WONDERS: I stepped foot in a Wegmans for the first time yesterday, but it definitely won’t be my last.

Ahead of the grocery store’s grand opening on Oct. 14, I got to sample a variety of foods, from Parmesan aged for two years in the Wegmans Cheese Cave to frozen pepperoni pizza with hot honey that rivals the best brands — and, of course, the Ultimate Chocolate Cake.

All I can say is that other grocery stores in the area better step up their game. They’ve got some serious competition coming.

😋 ENORMOUS EMPANADAS: Big Papa’s Empanadas (@bigpapasempanadas) is officially open in Charlotte, and the empanadas are massive.

These half-pound meat pockets are hip-hop themed, with favorites including the “Big Poppa,” “Born Sinner” and “Return of the Mac.”

Other highlights from the menu include flame-grilled wings coated in sauces like peach mustard Carolina BBQ or hot honey chipotle, and “For The Streets” tacos packed with grilled chicken or ground beef. Round out your meal with tallow fries or smoked gouda mac for a “little sumthin’ on da side.”

🧇 BLACK-OWNED BRUNCH: Rapper Rick Ross urged people to “support Black entrepreneurship” after seeing negative reviews of DaBaby’s restaurant.

So, I did just that — at Cuzzo’s Cuisine (@cuzzoscuisine).

The University City restaurant is known for seafood favorites like shrimp and grits, but its menu also includes chicken and waffles at a much better value.

At Cuzzo’s, “where everyone is family” isn’t just a tagline. You can taste it in the food, feel it in the service and, most importantly, see it in the prices.

🍻 HATE HIT. COMMUNITY HELD: Eleven Lakes Brewing (@elevenlakesbrewing) co-owner Teri Lippy was forced to cancel a drag show planned for last month after the brewery received threats and harassment.

The backlash began after the sold-out fundraiser was targeted online with claims about children and immigration, sparking nearly two weeks of abusive calls, comments and direct threats.

But when the event date arrived, regulars showed up anyway — filling the taproom with cold beers, conversation and support.

I visited the taproom last week to find out what keeps regulars coming back week after week. The event may have been canceled, but the community didn’t let hate have the last word.
