It is such happy news to be long listed for The Artist Prize for my work Respondents. I’ve slowed down a lot in general to look at and listen to the flowers since having my little one. I can only think this is good for my mind and body, and a fresh view on the world towards more embodied ways of working. I’ve just recovered from a raft of nursery illnesses while looking after a sick little one… so to see this news pop up in my email means a lot! Thank you to all the judges and @firstsitecolchester @artzealous by @evans.rita

I attended ‘Fieldwork’ a workshop which took place on community land on the outskirts of london by artists @_____joewalsh__ and Andrew Kerton. These drawings I made over the day are an enquiry of sensory herb connection and somatic movement into processes of plant becoming and emergence from Goethe’s gentle empiricism. Thank you Joe and Andrew for sharing your practice and research and the amazing group of artists and herbalists i met on this day. taken in London, United Kingdom by @evans.rita

Yesterday was Day 3 of 4 the spiral 🌀 landscape and tree instrument. Today we are filming and last night after baby Oscar finally fell asleep we watched extracts from Robert Smithson’s film of Spiral Jetty. Something great about watching it after very little sleep. Deep time and ecology, movement, skin and bone of a wooden body, and score making with @alexandrabaybutt.movement and Marguerite Galicia. #robertsmithson #spiraljetty #experimentalinstrument #choreographicobjects #experimentalsound @canada.council taken in Hackney Marshes by @evans.rita

Day 2, of the sculpture that shapes space. With Marguerite Galicia and @alexandrabaybutt.movement fully inhabiting and being with it. With the softness, sap smell and fleshiness of the wood. Day 2, before we began. The size of this piece is enough for two people to almost disappear under it and inhabit its coils. This day was full of vistas through the sculpture, realising its springiness and being enveloped as three become one. Images rise up and ground down. This is a performative compositional sculpture, so that as we shape it, it returns to shape us and so on!

Lemon Shield. I painted this while I was pregnant and put away in a draw until now one year later. The ‘pointers’ are shaping a new layer to my body a watery shield of sorts. Tour of a drawing. Can you imagine what characters are at play in this? What might their scale be and what are they saying ( or sounding ) to each other? Are they in the same time or space? by @evans.rita

Work in progress! Two alien guitars attached to one vibrational spiral. I like to come up with stuff and not worry about what it might do. I like to be surprised down the line. I think about how my body might feel when I stand inside the space of this work, as the spiral is not just flat, it unfurls into a voluminous 3D shape I can stand inside of. The vibrations carry along the spiral, through the wood. There’s something special about the fact it’s wood and it’s warmth and smell. Wood is from salvaged trees fallen from London’s parks. #experimentalinstrument #experimentalsound by @evans.rita

Feeling precarious? I do all the time as an artist. This is a drawing of a new instrument I’m making this summer, it’s big enough for two people to share moving within. It’s very wobbly, unstable, unwieldy and awkward because it’s made in steam bent wood. It will be difficult to move with but when you do, the two tuned guitar bodies will resonate in response. Four bodies, in relationship and I don’t know yet what will happen! #experimentalsound #experimentalinstrument taken in Tower Hamlets by @evans.rita

Only 11 hours left to bid on ‘Alien Blanket’ and support @imtgallery ! ((I love IMT, I breastfed there while one of Lindsay’s beautiful cats sat on my knee. )) —>>Link to online auction in my bio… ‘Alien Blanket’ Colour pencil and graphite on handmade paper
(2026)
29 x 21 cm

Alien Blanket is part of a drawing series titled Gatherings, which explores hybrid bodies as well as shifting, shimmering, transforming, and collective forms. This work has since evolved into new pieces that examine Evans’ experiences navigating her postpartum body and its newfound porosity.

Rita Evans was born in Vancouver, Canada, and currently lives and works in London. She makes performative objects that range from experimental musical instruments to large-scale, communally played structures. These invite audiences and participants into close listening.

Evans studied a BA in Fine Art Painting at The University of Brighton, an MA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London, Anthropology of Spaces, Places and the Built Environment at Goldsmiths University of London, and Sound Art, Composition & Field Recording at Morley College, London. Recent exhibitions include: London Open Live Film Programme, Whitechapel Gallery, London (2025); US Commissioned Sculptures for Art Lab: Sound, MoMA NY, Museum of Modern Art, New York (2024-26); and completed an Artist-In-Residence at New Dawn Centre, awarded Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grant (2025). She is a recipient of the Canada Council for the Arts (2025/6), Explore & Create Grant for the realisation of the project Sympathetic Sonic System.
