Last Halloween I received zero treats and the nasty trick of coming down with a cold.

In my downtime, I attempted to learn how to illustrate digitally.

The aim was to reference the nostalgic cover art seen on spooky young adult fiction novels from the 1990s. Iconic illustrations by R.L Stine's artist Tim Jacobus and covers from the likes of writer Christopher Pike have an almost photographic feel, so I began with an underlay of a pumpkin I had carved several years ago (see previous post), and built up the palette and features from there until none of the original photo existed. Maintaining the texture of the pumpkin was a challenge but I really enjoyed the airbrushed look it created, which made me feel quite chuffed considering I had no idea what I was doing and still don’t.

All that's missing now is a creepy title with some killer font, but that's for the next Halloween where I'm sick at home (coincidentally, this Halloween 🫠).

Pumpkin attempt number two, back in 2016.

One and two must have been pure luck because number three was abysmal. Word to the wise - if you're ever carving a pumpkin, give it a little knock to find one with really thick skin, that way you have plenty of depth to work with. Work fast too, because these beauties grow mould faster than a sharehouse bathroom.

Capturing this seedy expression took about 5-6 hours and another sleepless night reflecting on my life choices.

I started by cutting a hole at the top and emptying the innards. Messy visceral work, but this helps to determine the depth you have to play with when you begin to shave and carve features in with your tools. From there it's just several hours of slowly scraping away bits of pumpkin and wondering why you decided to start this protracted endeavour at night instead of during the day.

At 5am, we rest. All we see on the inside of our eyelids are pumpkins. We are afraid this might be forever.

Throwback to 2016. This was my first attempt at carving a 3D pumpkin for a Halloween installation at Watergardens Shopping Centre.
I'd never even carved a Jack-o'-lantern at this point but sometimes when people ask if you're a professional pumpkin carving artist, the best response is to say "I could be..." and figure it out from there.

Australians are embracing Halloween more by the year, and these days there are some remarkable artists taking up the challenge. At the time in Aus, it was novelty enough that I ended up being interviewed by our major TV and radio stations for news segments. As much as people love vegetables, I suspect this to be fortuitous spoils of a slow news day.

This first attempt took about 6-8 hours, no sleep and a great deal of research. Award winning artist's such as @villafanestudios were invaluable reference points for what the best of the best can be. A gal can dream - but not when she stays up all night carving a pumpkin.
