Happy National Native American Heritage Month 🦬🌽

Reading marginalized voices and learning about their history and culture is important to me. There There by Tommy Orange gives a peek into modern Native perspectives, and from a memorable cast of characters.

I live on unceded Cherokee land in Appalachia and It's bizarre to me how little we're taught in the US about Native history and their culture. If you live on American soil, you live in a page of their history 📖

My short story Almost Midnight has been published by Iron & Salt Press for their horror section 🎃 (Being published is an honor. And on Halloween makes me so proud!)

In Almost Midnight, a cosmic shift disrupts a couple's nightly routine as a woman realizes her husband is no longer the man she married 👤

You also get the chance to meet the white cat who makes her way into so many of my stories. 🙀

Read it through the link in my bio 📖

Happy Halloween! 😈

Best book of the season: Dracula. It was creepy, atmospheric, and had me repeating how good it is without giving up any details in case I spoil it for anyone else. Perfect for my annual September gothic to jump start Halloween 🦇

What was your favorite scary book?

I love a good slow burn horror. Tension stringing you along until it reaches a breaking point. Never knowing when the terror will strike. So I'm sharing some of my favorite classics, scariest, and the ones that stayed with me.

If you have a good slow burn in mind, please recommend it!

Hey there! I'm Eve and I've entered that part of a writer's life where I want to share my stories and my journey to wherever that may lead next. My work is strongly speculative (having all the answers bores me), atmospheric (I lean towards Southern Gothic), and literary (interiority is my favorite thing to write). Lately I've been working on short stories that range from creepy slow burns to weird and unhinged. So where do all the #weirdlit speculative horror fans hang out?

As a kid, my brother and I would pick our pumpkins from our grandma's pumpkin patch and I remember how excited I'd be to get it home to carve a jack-o-lantern. That thrill still gets me, even if my pumpkins come from a farmer's market now.

This year I wanted to try something folk horror. I think I mostly succeeded.

Ironweed 🪻

Tough as their name implies, these purple flowers are in bloom across Southern Appalachia right now offering up their nectar, symbolism, and some medicinal properties.

I moved to Appalachia over a decade ago and wanted to start a series that's fascinated me forever — folklore and symbols. Appalachia has a rich history braided from nature, religion, and superstition with influences from both native and settler's beliefs.

I've started a Halloween tradition over the last few years where I treat myself to some beautifully bound horror books I've loved. This year I picked up Dracula, Inferno, and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Suggest me something to add next year!

Stir of Echoes is one of my comfort movies. It takes me back to cool, autumn nights curled up in a cozy blanket on the couch, a hot mug of spiced orange tea warming my hands, and the tension gnawing at me as Kevin Bacon's character becomes more and more consumed with unearthing the mystery.

Earlier this year I finally read the book and was both legitimately creeped out in some parts and wooed by lovely prose in others, but the broader storyline and California setting took away from the atmosphere the movie brought.

Anyway, I'm not really here to give book or movie reviews — that's not for me. But watching this in the fall has become a tradition, a craving, and sets the mood of the season.

There are stories all around us waiting to get out. A brief stroll around my property in Appalachia had several tales to tell.

Bram Stoker wrote Dracula over 120 years ago and it still shapes our image of vampires today. Bats, garlic, wooden stakes...the bloodthirsty nocturnal creature wasn't created by Bram Stoker, but he canonized it.

And it's interesting how one piece of literature can shape our perception. Growing up I would joke that my age-defying grandma was part vampire because my great-grandparents emigrated from Transylvania. My grandma also lived to be 100, so maybe it's not all myth 🧛‍♀️
