the other day my grandmother looked at me and said she feels sorry for me.

at first I was like „ya, reasonable“
because honestly, if you look around.
there’s so much to be angry about, to grieve, to resist. it feels like the world is stuck in survival mode and we’re expected to call it normal.

but god bless her soul, that’s not what she meant hahaha.

she meant:
I’m not married.
I don’t own a house.
I travel too much.
I don’t have “security.”
I built a life that doesn’t depend on someone else.

she feels sorry because I’m a dancer.
a freelancer.
because I piece my life together, project by project, place by place.

ofc there are things I pity.
but they’re not my life choices.
they’re systems and structures.

my life?
I do fckn like it.

I dance.
I create.
I travel.
I teach.
I try things, fail, begin again.
I feel grateful for this life.

and there’s a strange tension in that.
feeling gratitude while the world feels like it’s falling apart.
feeling joy and anger at the same time.
feeling lucky and furious. both exist and both are real.

Bald wieder mehr astrale Bewegungsoptik von mir, it’s official ✍️ In exactly four weeks my piece is heading to Budapest for the Monodance Festival.

In times that feel like a fever dream, questioning our perception becomes a quiet form of resistance.

AND WHAT REMAINS is a choreographic journey into the liminal space of sleep paralysis. 🌑✨
A state between dreaming and waking, where the body is paralysed while the mind remains wide awake - where boundaries dissolve and the familiar turns strange.

Accompanied by a haunting soundscape by Viennese musician Georg Haider (@spitzweg_erich), we explore the tension between resistance and surrender, control and its loss.

Don’t drift into powerlessness - stay vigilant.
An easy imperative. But how easy is it? 👁️⛓️

From a fever dream to the international stage. Let’s go 🥹

Oh, the blonde buzzcut era… been there, done that haha.
Currently fighting the urge to shave it all off AGAIN. Not for the aesthetics, obviously, but for the feeling. And for the confusion it creates when breaking societal expectations.

January: holy sh*t.
February: a little quieter.

Three countries, two continents - teaching, creating, performing, meeting, dreaming.
China delivered culture, food and rooms full of inspiring dancers.

The cherry on top haha: holding a certificate for my guest professorship at the University of Jinan, right after standing in front of a packed room of dancers, choreography students, choreographers, artistic directors… yap. That one landed. Big time.

Now February slows it down (for me personally, not talking about world happenings).
And honestly, that contrast feels kind of necessary in a freelancer life.

BRICKS IN THE WALL by Eva Schmechtig.

Created with the first-year students of KARI Tanzausbildung aaand Selina.
Eight days of creation.
Twenty minutes on stage.
And not enough phone storage to record the whole, even though part two hits hard. 🥹🤘🏼

“Bricks in the Wall” is a contemporary dance piece exploring the tension between the individual and the collective.
Inspired by Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall”, I ask:
When do we become part of the mass?
When do we resist?
And where does one end and the other begin?

Using actual footage and sounds from current protests and uprisings, the work reflects a world in growing polarisation and demands constant navigation, re-adjustment and questioning of our own position.

The choreography is based on instant composition.
Independent bodies with individual impulses form temporary alliances, structures, power dynamics - and fall apart just as quickly.

The sound design was created by myself through re-composing existing music and complemented by unreleased works by artists friends: Opening with “Glitch Shell 5.5” by Odysseas Manidakis and culminating in a grand finale with “Power to the People” by Kerstin Fischer aka Heavy Hands. #movement #behindthescenes #artistlife #choreography

Talking about style - today is performance day.
I will perform parts of my solo work, but tbh I’m way more nervous about seeing the students of Kari.Tanzhaus bring my ideas to life than about my own inner circus on stage hahaha.

Full-circle moment ✨
Creating with the students of Kari.Tanzausbildung atm is giving me such a strong flashback to my own creation “The Rehearsal” in my last year of studies. Different fire, same curiosity, same late-room magic.

Here you see such a cool team - incredible dancers and friends. Now you’re all spread across the world, absolutely rocking your lives and my heart is very full and a little nostalgic haha.

Written Portraits + Danced Portraits + Musical Portraits yesterday at @atlas.wien together with the fantastic @evelofant in danced portraits and the maestro @spitzweg_erich in musical portraits.

Great wonderful winter soft night, wrote danced and played around 15 portraits. Want to thank you all of you that were there, giving, smiling, being!

We see each other soon at our regular monthly Written Portraits at this beautiful house @atlas.wien !
