When I was 5yo I asked my mom to put me into dancing school and for the next 15 years dancing was my life. This also led to immense bullying I experienced in elementary and high school. I was thought to believe that there was something wrong with me and that I was not a ‘man’. They would call me all different names from ‘girl’ to ‘fa**ot’ and many days I was genuinely worried for my life. When I was in school and received an award for my athletic achievements in dancing I got booed on stage. I will never forget the words my mom said to me that day “remember that you were up, and they were down”. Today, I’m on the cover of Men’s Health. Never could I have imagined in that age that I would grow up into a man I am today. I believe my words, my actions, my heart and my kindness are where my masculinity is emphasized the most.
