🏃‍♂️ How fast could I run 2km?

This year: 1km in 2:59.9, 5km in 17:54 (3:36/km), and 10km in 38:07 (3:48/km). Time to find out…

The perfect test: the Waikato Bay of Plenty 2000m Champs at Porritt Stadium.
Luckily, fellow masters Mike Pugh and Malcolm Smith were there to make it a proper race.
On the start line with lightning-fast juniors and senior men, my first goal was simple: don’t get lapped 😅

I tried to stick with Mike through the first 400m… but after 500m he glided away and left me with some deep thinking to do. 🏃‍♂️💨
Malcolm and I then started picking off a couple of juniors. With 200m to go, I found one last kick and finally managed to shake him.

Result: 21st overall • 2nd master • 6:46.7 🔥

Not quite my goal pace of 3:20/km, but a great start to the season. On to the next one! 💪 #everfit #dailyhabits #expansivewellness #runningphysio #mastersrunning taken in Porritt Stadium by @everfitcoach

51 km for 51 years 🎉🏃

A celebration of another year around the sun—and a reminder of what makes life feel full: meaningful goals, movement, health, friendship, family, and a little adventure close to home.

The day began at 5am under the stars with Coral on the bike, then into a sunrise and laps around the Daisy Hardwick track with Harley. From there, the kilometres became a rolling celebration—bridge miles, surprise catch-ups, friends joining for sections, Stella helping me on the final 2km, and plenty of encouragement when the legs started to feel it.

51 km wasn’t about chasing pace. It was about appreciating a body that can move, people who show up, and the beautiful place we get to call home.

The final kilometres were slow, but the heart was full. And the post-run cake? Absolutely deserved. 🍰

Here’s to setting goals that stretch us, staying healthy enough to chase them, and making more micro-adventures with good people along the way.

Can’t wait for the next one #everfit #motionismedicine #microadventure #51kfor51yrs #holistichealth taken in Tauranga, New Zealand by @everfitcoach

Every Wednesday, I leave the wetsuit behind.

My No Wetsuit Wednesday swim is a small weekly practice in choosing discomfort on purpose. The first step into cold water is never easy—but that is exactly the point.

There is a Māori whakataukī that stays with me:

“E kitea ai ngā taonga o te moana, me mākū koe.”
To see the treasures of the ocean, you must get wet.

For me, those “treasures” are not just found in the water. They are the calm that follows the initial shock, the clarity that comes from being fully present, and the repeated confidence of doing something hard.

This swim supports my wellbeing because it asks me to slow down, breathe deeply, and meet discomfort with curiosity rather than resistance. It is a reminder that we rarely find growth, perspective, or joy by staying entirely comfortable.

What is one small practice that helps you step beyond your comfort zone and feel more like yourself?

Sub-18 at 50 ✅

I set myself a 2026 goal: run a 5K in under 18 minutes during my 51st year.

Today, I did it.

This goal has reminded me why I love having something challenging to work towards. Not because the finish line is everything, but because of what the process asks of you: consistency, curiosity, structure, and the willingness to keep showing up.
A few lessons from the journey:

1. Make your goals challenging enough to matter. The best ones stretch you and make the small daily choices feel meaningful.

2. Build a routine you can trust. Easy long runs, tempo sessions, hills and speed work, swimming, and strength training all had their place.

3. Don’t wait to feel motivated. Follow the structure and start the session anyway. Most of the time, you’ll be glad you did.

4. Adapt when things don’t go to plan. If running isn’t possible, ride or swim. Keep moving in whatever way you can — it supports more than fitness; it supports your mental wellbeing.

5. Be grateful you get to take part. I’ve stopped waiting until I feel “ready” for an event. If I’m not sick or injured, I’m ready enough.

Most importantly, thank you to the people who make the training joyful: the Tuesday long-run crew, No Wetsuit Wednesday crew, Thursday tempo crew, and Saturday speed team.

You’re more than training buddies — you’re a vital part of my wellbeing plan. ❤️

I’ve been swimming for over 45 years. In the past I’ve had to buy a new pair of goggles every season so I could have that fog free advantage for open water swim and triathlon races. Within a few swims my goggles would start to fog and I’d have poor vision which is a disadvantage with sighting.

My new @effortlessswimming goggles are epic. The nano clear technology is baked into the lens! No cheap coating that wears off.

Having great vision in the pool and open water is game changing. It enhances my swim experience and performance.

I love challenges mixed in with my usual training sessions. Today I tried to match @michaelbrake over 30sec of rowing. He went 209m. How would I compare to an Olympian? #everfit #dailyhabits #fullbodystrong #expansivewellness taken in Flex Fitness Mt Maunganui by @everfitcoach

Tomorrow the Mount Half, 10km & 5km will be on starting at the Mount end of Marine Parade.

The 5km will kick things off at 7:45am, then the 10km waves at 8am and the half at 8:20am

Three ways to run a 5K:

1. 📈Positive split— go out hard and fight to hold on.

2. 🥜 Even split— settle into the target pace and stay patient. Spread the peanut butter evenly

3. 📉Negative split — start controlled, then build through the second half.

At the Waikato Bay of Plenty 5km Road Championships, the plan was simple: run an even split and chase a sub-18-minute time.

Instead, I got caught up in the early racing and went out too hard. The tight turns and a course that ran long could make for convenient excuses, but the truth is simple: I didn’t break 18 minutes.

I was still pleased to finish second behind Mike Pugh, (50-54yr), but there’s more to take from the race than the placing.

Failure gives feedback. It shows where the plan slipped, what needs work. Curiosity matters most. Maybe the path to getting better is not just training harder, but being willing to change the plan, and race with more patience.

You’re never too old to chase times, test yourself, and stay curious about what might help you improve. Double down on the basics - full body strength, yoga, swimming and change some habits that aren’t serving the goal - poor sleep routine & eating treats after 7:30pm.

The goal is still ongoing. The work continues. 🏃‍♂️#everfit #runningphysio #runningcoach #dailyhabits #fullbodystrong

One bonus of speaking events that I’ll never take for granted: it’s not only getting to share my holistic health tips on strength work & positive relationships— it’s the people you meet along the way.

I had the privilege of sharing the stage with two incredible clinicians:

Dr John Cullen

- A true pioneer in joint innovation in New Zealand, including being at the forefront of the country’s first total knee arthroplasty
- Helped introduce early total joint surgeries across the country, with pioneering work in elbow, shoulder, and ankle replacements
- Double Olympian 1960/64 Hockey.
- An extraordinary surgical legacy: 3,000+ total hip replacements and 2,000+ total knee replacements before retiring from active surgery in 2013

Dr. Deirdre Seoighe

- Graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (Honours, 2003)
- Completed a research masters in surgery, helped establish Ireland’s first graduate-entry medical programme.
- Completed specialist registrar training in plastic surgery and achieved fellowship exams in plastic & reconstructive surgery (2015)
- Undertook a burns surgery fellowship at Middlemore Hospital, and is now Clinical Lead for Burns Surgery covering a huge region from Taranaki to Gisborne, while also operating regularly at the National Burns Unit
- Somehow does all of that while being a busy mum of four! Inspiring.

Grateful for the conversations, the shared values, and the reminder that when you step up to speak, you don’t just exchange information — you build community.

Thanks Tamahere Country Club for organising and having us.

Such a privilege to speak with a group of rangatahi at Poutiri wellness centre about wellness, health, purpose, and connection.
My mahi draws on life as a physio, endurance coach/athlete, counselling practitioner, content maker, and someone who believes deeply in living simply, staying connected, and caring for people and planet.

The message was simple: wellness is about the things we do each day that help us feel good, function well, and bring good vibes to our lives and others.

Some of the key takeaways:

Eat real food — mostly plants, fibre, colour, and less processed stuff
Get strong — strength supports function, confidence, and injury prevention
Move daily— motion is lotion. Less screens
Sit less— standing, stretching, and regular movement matter
Prioritise sleep — recovery, brain health, mood, and energy all depend on it
Find purpose — have a reason to get up in the morning
Downshift stress— breathe, pray, walk, get in nature, connect
Do hard things— cold water, challenge, discomfort, growth
Value relationships— whānau, friendship, community, love in action
Care for the whenua— when the land is well, the people are well

A few whakataukī that align beautifully with this kaupapa:
He oranga ngākau, he pikinga waiora — positive feelings in your heart lift your wellbeing
Nāu te rourou, nāku te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi— with your food basket and my food basket, the people will thrive
Toitū te whenua, toitū te tangata — when the land is sustained, the people are sustained
Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini — my strength is not mine alone, but comes from the collective
Wellness is not perfection. It’s an ongoing tweaking of habits that nudges us toward health, wellbeing, connection, and meaning.

I have a love / hate relationship with winter ocean swimming.

I never look forward to getting in, but love the feeling during, and the incredible buzz post swim. My no wetsuit Wednesday lunchtime swim is an integral part of my wellbeing routine.

I’m loving @profgrantschofield new book 📖 CHOOSE YOUR HARD - The science of doing hard sh*t to build health that lasts a life time. Grant talks about 7 truths; no. 4 is the benefit of COLD. We live in a world that strives for comfort - this results in less resilience.

Getting into cold water creates stress that the body and mind adapt to. It teaches the system to return to calm. When you combine the cold with swimming, nature and awesome people it becomes a powerful wellness intervention.

I am happy to introduce anyone to this simple practice. If you want to explore it further please get in touch #everfit #chooseyourhard #dailyhabits #cold #oceanswimming taken in Mount Maunganui by @everfitcoach

Just wrapped up an incredible session with a group of teenage athletes and musicians in association with the @adastrafoundation, diving deep into how flow can unlock their true potential. We explored that magical state where time slows down, movement feels effortless, and everything clicks into place. Whether you’re on the field of play, stage, or studio, flow isn’t just a bonus—it’s transformative for performance.

In today’s world of constant distractions, tech overload, and pressure to chase results over passion, it’s easy to lose that connection. But we all have the wiring for flow. The key is turning down the static, building grit, not letting comparison steal joy, and syncing body and mind through recovery practices like sleep optimisation, breathwork, yoga, mindfulness, and allowing the screen to serve not enslave.

These foundations—along with emotional intelligence and self-awareness—help manage pressure, procrastination, and that awkward self-consciousness that creeps in during adolescence, reconnecting us to the natural, absorbed flow we had as kids. Bringing back more curiosity, awe, and space for feedback.

A highlight for me was connecting with the other presenters, Jess from @eatwisenutrition and listening to Sprint Kayaker Olympian no. 1398 Max Brown @maxbrownnz who is also an incredible musician.

I can’t promise instant flow from one talk, but if you lock in, understand the science, and practice with intention, you’ll create a real shift. Put in the work for both body and mind, and you’ll tap into flow more often—just like young stars such as Coco Gauff, Carlos Alcaraz, and singer songwriter Prentiss are proving.

Flow is the future of optimised performance. Tapping into what we already have, not paying big money 💴 for pills, powders, potions, and peptides.

Grateful for the energy 💪 in the room today—let’s keep building smarter, not harder.

Get in touch if your organisation or group would like to hear about the power of the flow state for wellbeing, mental health, performance & productivity.
