TODAY we joined @sfwmd_gov and @jacksonvilledistrict as they signed an agreement to move the Blue Shanty Flow Way project forward! 🐊💧The timing is meaningful: exactly one year ago, the state and federal government made history by agreeing to accelerate the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Reservoir by FIVE years. Today, we kept that momentum going.The Blue Shanty Flow Way is a vital piece of the Central Everglades Planning Project. When complete, miles of old roadbed and levees will have been removed and wetland connectivity restored, allowing much needed clean freshwater to flow into Everglades National Park and Florida Bay.With federal funds in place, the State of Florida can now advance this work to line up with the completion of the EAA Reservoir in 2029 — so once the reservoir is done, the water can flow south right away."Today further underscores that when strong state and federal leadership work together, America's Everglades and Florida's clean water economy both come out ahead," said our CEO Eric Eikenberg at the event. A few weeks ago, I was able to bring some of the incredible folks from @evergladesfoundation shark tagging to film some of the work they are funding with my ForEverglades Research Grant! We were able to deploy two pop-off satellite tags from @lotektelemetry on a lemon and great hammerhead. These tags will give us information on location, depth, and temperature for these incredible sharks. TODAY Governor Ron DeSantis signed a budget that continues to move Everglades restoration forward, advancing the world’s largest ecosystem restoration effort and one of the most important projects for the state’s environment and economy.This funding also includes what is needed to complete the state portion of the EAA Reservoir, the central and critical piece of the Everglades restoration puzzle that is set to be realized five years ahead of schedule. What do Floridians really know about the threats facing the Everglades? 🐊💧 A new peer-reviewed study by our Chief Economist Dr. Paul Hindsley, published in the Environmental Management scientific journal, surveyed Florida residents and found a clear connection: the more people understand about environmental science, the more likely they are to recognize that water diversion and poor water quality are serious threats to the Everglades. Time to celebrate another year of Everglades literacy as our Education team continues to expand its impact across the Sunshine State! 🌿☀️📚👉 In the 2025-2026 school year, our PreK-12 Everglades Literacy Program: 📍 Expanded to 32 counties statewide.🏫 Designated 119 Everglades Champion Schools – including 32 new schools!👩‍🏫 Hosted 73 teacher trainings attended by 1,475 educators.🎓 Reached 56,200+ students in Champion Schools and 20,000 more through classroom presentations. This week, The Everglades Foundation and dozens of partners and clean water advocates headed to Capitol Hill with one clear message: Everglades Restoration Is Working and It’s Worth It! 💧🐊75 individuals crisscrossed the Senate and the House, meeting with members of Congress from all over the country and from both sides of the aisle in support of America’s Everglades. We met with dozens of elected officials and their staff, celebrating the historic bipartisan support behind restoring and protecting the source of drinking water for millions of Floridians and a trillion-dollar economic asset to our state.We were also honored to present the 2026 America’s Everglades Champion Award to two longtime Everglades champions who have helped move restoration forward: U.S. Representative Mario Diaz-Balart and U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz. 🏆Thank you to all the partners, advocates, and lawmakers who continue to stand with us. From one-of-a-kind field excursions to networking events and classroom sessions, the Preserving Paradise program brings together 20 Southwest Florida locals from across different industries and community organizations to learn about the Everglades ecosystem’s role in our region’s economy. 🌊🌱This year’s cohort will join us for 6-8 courses between August and November 2026, where they’ll gain an in-depth understanding of America’s Everglades, and the role that local leaders can play in protecting it. The EAA Reservoir is not just another infrastructure project.It is the crown jewel of Everglades restoration.To understand the scale, the reservoir spans roughly 10,000 acres, large enough to fit Manhattan inside it.
