Had the most amazing opportunity to present at the EVERWAY UNLOCKED conference with Luis Pérez! 🌟

We were dynamic on the UDL & Technology front—Luis shared essential insights on accessible technology, accessible materials, and assistive tech, while I focused on building learner agency.

At the end of the day, the ultimate goal of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is to build agency for every single learner, but that can only happen when instruction is truly accessible!

Dive in to the free webinar at the link in the bio to learn how embracing accessible tech helps us design instruction with firm goals and flexible means ✨

What if we designed learning for difference from the very beginning?

That was a powerful message from Dr. Katie Novak and Luis Pérez during Unlocking UDL: Turning Inclusive Design into Everyday Practice at Everway Unlocked.

UDL gives learners flexible ways to access, participate and show what they know, without lowering expectations.

As Katie put it: “You get to be exactly who you are and you’re going to be successful with me.”

When we design for learner variability from the start, we don’t just create access. We build agency.

"A presentation slide titled 'Unpacking the Universally Designed Lesson' showing a three-column table. The columns are labeled 'Lesson Phase,' 'What the Teacher Designs,' and 'Where Tyler Has Agency.' Accompanying the slide are two individuals in separate video call boxes on a split screen. The background is plain, one side is green. The content discusses making goals clear, activating prior knowledge, and exploring and gathering information." by @everwayglobal

A key takeaway from Dr. Catlin Tucker’s opening keynote at Everway Unlocked was about how the problem isn’t how much technology we use. It’s how we design the learning around it.

Technology has the potential to remove barriers, create more flexible learning pathways and give learners more ways to show what they know.

But purposeful technology should do something else, too: strengthen the human side of learning.

As Catlin said, technology should “create capacity for human connection, not compete with it.”

A powerful reminder that the goal isn’t more technology. It’s better learning by design.

One of the big takeaways from our Technology That’s Worth the Screen Time session at Everway Unlocked:

The question isn’t how do we use less technology. It’s how do we choose better.

Technology earns its place when it removes barriers, widens access and gives learners more choice in how they learn.

As Susan Ward put it: “One size fits one.”

Because purposeful technology isn’t about more screen time. It’s about creating better opportunities for every learner.

✋ How do we shift from asking how much screen time is too much screen time to asking, “What are students being asked to do on these screens with this technology?”

I’ll explore this idea in my opening virtual keynote at Everway Unlocked: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗜𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻.
