POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This is the story of Ukrainian soldier Yeva Smyrnova and her husband Danyil, also a soldier, who was killed in battle.

She's 21 years old and a widow. At the time of filming, she was also 9 months pregnant.

It's part of a longer report on Ukraine's demographic crisis, an existential threat grown more severe since Russia's invasion.

In Ukraine, deaths outnumber births by more than 3 to 1, while Ukrainians in occupied territory are made "Russian"

A Ukrainian demographer told us “The war will end with the victory of Ukraine, otherwise there will be no Ukraine, otherwise there is nothing to talk about.”

Since filming, Yeva has given birth to a healthy baby boy.

Morning on the tarmac at Kabul airport waiting for an evacuation flight last week. Always heard the place was beautiful. Wish I had seen more of it. by @everydayjoselow

Passing through the Abbey gate at Kabul airport earlier this week as we left our compound just down the road. Driving past abandoned cars left by those fleeing the country. The situation there has gotten much much worse since then. taken in Hamid Karzai International Airport by @everydayjoselow
