Some of you have DMed me asking who is behind the glow 💛

Hi, I’m Onika Johnson.

Autism Mom.
Inclusive Education Consultant.
Founder of Every Step Shines.

This space was created from the quiet parts of my journey…

The moments I carried after everyone else moved on.
The advocacy not everyone saw.
The prayers, the learning, the love… and the questions that made me look deeper.

My son is the heart of this work 💛

Because this was never just about the child.

It’s about the parent.
The educator.
The caregiver.
The sibling.

The whole village… carrying more than people see.

No Glow Shines Alone 💛

If you’re in this season and need support, I created a free guide for you.

Comment GLOW and I’ll send it to you 💛

There are moments when a child is struggling, and everyone around them seems to have an opinion.

What the child should do.
What the parent should do.
What the educator should do.

Yet understanding rarely begins with more pressure.

It begins when someone pauses long enough to wonder:

What might this child be carrying right now?

Because behind every behaviour, every challenge, and every hard moment is a child who deserves to be seen as more than the moment they are having.

And behind that child is often a parent, caregiver, educator, or family member carrying more than most people realize.

That is why Every Step Shines exists.

To help us see deeper.
Support differently.
And create more space for connection.

No Glow Shines Alone.

Place a 💛 if you believe children and the village deserve a softer way forward.

Follow for gentler conversations around children, connection, and the village.

✨ Welcome to Every Step Shines ✨

Where behaviour is seen as communication.
Where connection comes before correction.
Where support replaces pressure.

And where no glow shines alone. 💛

This space was created for the moments people don’t always see…
The overwhelm.
The second-guessing.
The quiet question of “Am I doing enough?”

As an Autism mom and Resource Consultant, I’ve lived this, and I know how heavy it can feel.

That’s why Every Step Shines exists.

To support not just children…
but the parents, educators, and caregivers walking beside them.

Children are not problems to fix.
They are individuals to be understood.

If you’re part of the village; you belong here 🤍

Follow @everystepshines and share this with someone who needs support, understanding, and a reminder that they’re not alone.

This is just the beginning 💫

NOVEMBER'S GLOW WORD: BECOMING. 💛

What if the progress you've been waiting to see has already started happening, just not in the way you expected?

As an autism mom, I know what it's like to celebrate moments others might not even notice. What seems small to someone else can mean everything to us.

Maybe it's a child navigating something that once felt overwhelming. A parent learning to respond differently. An educator beginning to see beyond behaviour.

Different journeys. Different kinds of growth.

And sometimes, while we're focused on who our children are becoming, we forget that we're becoming too.

💛 Not everything growing is visible. That doesn't mean nothing is changing.

This November, let's recognize the growth happening in our children, ourselves, and the village walking alongside us.

💜💙💚🧡

What's one thing this journey has taught you about yourself?

Sometimes, the autistic child we think we understand is the one whose story we know the least about. 💜

As a Resource Consultant, I've supported children whose behaviours were being questioned.

As a mother raising a neurodivergent child, I've also been the parent who knew there was more happening than what others could see.

And here's what I've learned.

A child can be struggling long before anyone notices.

We might see the reaction without understanding what led to it.

But we don't need every answer to change how we respond.

Sometimes, asking a different question or noticing something we've overlooked can make all the difference.

That's part of why I created Every Step Shines.

Not every struggle comes with words. And not every need is immediately understood. 💜

Sometimes we're waiting for a child to tell us what's wrong, without realizing they may already be trying to communicate.

Through their movements. Their expressions. Their actions. Or a change in how they engage with the world around them.

But here's what I want us to think about…

What happens when a child's communication doesn't look the way we expect?

For autistic children, communication can take many forms, including speech, gestures, AAC, and behaviour.

And when we only recognize certain ways of communicating, we risk overlooking what a child is trying to express.

The message isn't always missing. Sometimes, we're still learning how to recognize it.

That's why looking beneath behaviour matters.

💜 Have you ever realized your child was communicating something you hadn't recognized at first?

I'd love to hear what that experience taught you.

Follow Every Step Shines for more conversations about autism, communication, and understanding what's beneath behaviour.

No Glow Shines Alone. 💜💙💚🧡

My son's autism journey began long before I understood what I was noticing. 💜

I remember the questions, the uncertainty, and being told he'd grow out of it.

I remember wondering if I was noticing too much or not enough.

But somewhere along the way, I realized something.

Understanding autism was important. But understanding MY son was just as important.

His interests. His joys. What brought him comfort. The way he experienced the world.

And the more I learned about him, the more my own perspective began to change.

I didn't have all the answers then. And even today, I'm still learning.
What started as a mother searching for answers became the beginning of a journey that would change us both.

That was my first spark. ✨

To the parent who is just beginning this journey: You don't need to have every answer today. Give yourself permission to keep learning your child.

I'd love to hear from you. What was your first spark? What moment made you begin seeing or understanding your child differently? Share it in the comments. Your story might help another parent feel less alone.

We often talk about the difference educators make in children's lives. But how often do we stop to think about the people behind that difference?

The patience they extend. The challenges they navigate. The moments they carry home that nobody else sees.

As someone whose professional journey began as an Early Childhood Educator, today holds a special place in my heart.

I know how meaningful this work can be, but I also know how important it is for the people doing it to feel valued, heard, and supported.

Appreciation should go beyond one day, one celebration, or two simple words.

💜 Let's fill the comments with appreciation! Tag an early childhood educator or child care worker who has made a difference, and tell them WHY they matter. Let's give them their flowers while they can receive them! 💐

Happy Child Care Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day! 💜💙💚🧡

When my son was diagnosed with autism, I was so focused on making sure he would be okay that I barely knew how to admit I was scared. 💜

I had questions I couldn't answer, emotions I didn't know how to explain, and a future I was still trying to understand.

Yet there were appointments to attend, decisions to make, and moments when I needed to advocate for my child, even while I was still finding my own footing.

That's something we don't talk about enough in autism parenting.

Sometimes, the person speaking up the loudest for their child is also the person struggling to find the words for what they're carrying.

You can be deeply committed to your child's growth and still need someone to make space for yours.

Because advocating for your child should never mean disappearing from your own story.

💬 What's one thing you've been carrying as an autism parent that you wish someone would ask you about?

There's room for your story here, too. 💜💙💚🧡

A few months ago, Every Step Shines was something I was carrying quietly in my heart.

I knew there were conversations I wanted to have. About our children. About behaviour. About communication. About the things motherhood taught me that no textbook ever could.

What I didn’t know was whether anyone would listen.
I’m learning that purpose doesn’t always arrive with proof that it’s working.

Sometimes you pray.
You plant.
You show up.
You trust God with what you cannot see yet.
And that is where I am entering October.

Still building. Still learning. Still becoming.

But more certain than ever that this work matters.
Not because of numbers.
Because every time a parent feels understood, an educator pauses before assuming, or a child is seen beyond a moment of behaviour, that matters.
I’m ready to share so much more.

💜 What is something you know you’re not supposed to give up on yet?

Tell me below. I’d love to walk into October hearing what you’re still believing for.

💜💙💚🧡

Somewhere along the way, “I’ve got it” can become automatic.
Not because we never need support.

Sometimes we’ve just become so used to anticipating, remembering, explaining, advocating and figuring things out that carrying it ourselves starts to feel normal.
And people see that.

They see capable.
They see prepared.
They see strong.
They may not realize how much is happening underneath all of that.
I’m learning that a village isn’t only the people who say, “Let me know if you need anything.”

Sometimes it’s the person who pays enough attention to notice before you have to ask.

💬 Parents, what do you wish someone would notice without you having to say it?

Share this with a parent who might quietly be carrying more than people realize.

And follow @everystepshines. We’re talking about the parts of autism motherhood that don’t always get said out loud.

💜💙💚🧡

Autism parenting taught me that having a village and having an understanding village are not always the same thing.

People can love our children deeply and still question the support they see us giving.

Sometimes they are only seeing the moment.
We have been learning the child.
And part of building a village is helping the people around our children understand what we have learned too.

Because I don't need everyone to already know.
I need people willing to learn.

💬 What's one thing you wish your child's village understood better?

Send this to someone who is learning your child alongside you, and follow @everystepshines as we keep building a village that looks a little deeper.

💜💙💚🧡
