With mama gators nesting and a new crop of hatchlings just around the corner, thought I’d share these photos of little baby gators that still had their egg tooth. Only time I’ve gotten to see that. For anyone unfamiliar with the egg tooth, as was the case with me prior to getting these photos, it’s the tiny nub at the end of the snout. Made of keratin rather than bone, it’s a temporary tool that helps baby alligators slice through their eggshell. They lose it soon after hatching, and their mother’s care begins almost immediately as she uncovers the nest and helps them to the water. Nearly the new state bird. Beautiful, proud, unmistakable. The flamingo! They’ve returned to South Florida after more than a 100 year absence, thanks to a hurricane blowing them our way. Happily they’ve lingered in the area for several years now and there are hopes that they may stay and form a breeding population. For that, great care must be taken not to spook them! We sat quietly with them for a long while, drifting with the tide just close enough to get shots with a long lens. You can never be sure you’ll spot them, as I can attest personally after hours of kayaking and trying, but when you do, it’s something special, always to be treasured. A huge thank you to @captqdestout for always being up for my crazy adventures and @kensiestallings for the fun and depth of knowledge she brought to the day. Cecile, American crocodile and reigning queen of Shark Valley, really had to work for her grand entrance today! Water levels are low such that she had to haul herself up and over the now 2 foot lip to reach her favorite sunning spot. It was with mixed feelings that I spotted my first ever Florida black bear yesterday. I rolled up to the first of roughly 12 alligator nests along the tram trail just as the sun was rising. That triggered a huge commotion out of sight in the deep brush just behind the nest. I moved forward to get a better view and saw this beautiful black bear. He paused to look at me then took off running into the sawgrass. What I realized in looking closely at the nest is that he had just finished opening it and eaten all the eggs. 😳 As I rode along the trail, checking all of the known nests, I discovered more of the same. This clever bear had clearly figured out that alligator eggs are good eating and easy picking. Every last nest, decimated and eggs devoured. So on the one hand, yay bear. Well fed and hopefully healthy. But on the other hand, seems we won’t be seeing many, or any?, hatchlings next month. At just about a week old, these tiny crocodile hatchlings may look fierce but they are in fact incredibly vulnerable. Birds, fish, raccoons and even larger crocodiles are ready to snap them up given the chance. So they hide away amongst the roots of the mangroves, where I can tell you they are incredibly hard to find. They stay close together in what is referred to as a nursery, reacting quickly to noise and movement. Presumably mom is still nearby watching over them as best she can though I didn’t spot her. Even so only a small fraction will eventually become the adults that I love to see patrolling the South Florida coast. It took a full day of searching, many miles traveled, by car, boat and even canoe, but it was totally worth it to see something so special! #hatchlings #americancrocodiles #babycrocs #evergladesnationalpark #everythingeverglades taken in Everglades National Park by @everythingeverglades

Red shouldered hawks are common in South Florida but this encounter was special. It was just me on a trail wandering with my camera, enjoying what nature chose to offer. This particular bird was not only beautiful but exceptionally calm and we spent quite some time in quiet contemplation of each other.
