An ambitious TBR that I made earlier this year… and I’ve only read one of the books so far. It got a whopping two stars from me 😩 (I’m looking at you, Vivek Oji!!)

Maybe… just maybe I can squeeze one more of these in before the year ends. Which one do you guys recommend?

Which Booksta friends come through every time with the recommendations for you?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ll buy any book that @ibingebooks @ash_and_her_books @danzibooks recommend to me. The taste is exquisite. No ashy bookshelves over here😤! Even though we all like different things, somehow our reading tastes manage to complement each other perfectly. Most of my recent purchases have been because of these 3 and I must say they haven’t missed yet 😮‍💨 I bought this entire series because they said to 🤣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Even though this community periodically falls apart and gets loud af in the stories, my reading experience since joining Bookstagram has been amazing and I wouldn’t trade any of my reading besties for anything in the world! ✨✨

Thank you @stmartinspress for gifting me a finished copy of Love by the Book by Jessica George. All opinions are my own.

In Love by the Book, we follow Remy, an author struggling with writer’s block and the slow disintegration of her friend group. We also follow Simone, a teacher who has recently been excommunicated by her family and is desperately yearning for connection and the kind of platonic intimacy that feels impossible to find. Both women are deeply flawed, but when their paths cross, they decide to give friendship a chance.

This was an easy five star read and immediately sent me down a rabbit hole looking for more books centered on female friendships. This book is for the gworls and the gworls’ gworls.

I loved reading about a relationship dynamic that wasn’t romantic, but instead explored women navigating the messy, complicated ways they love each other. Jessica George has such a gift for writing complex, compelling characters who feel incredibly real, and I will always be a fan of her craft.

Recommend me more books like this one, please 🥹🥹 taken in Black Women Forever by @everythingshereads

Thank you @hbgcanada for gifting me an early copy of Skin Contact by Elisa Faison. All opinions are my own.

The story follows Frances and Ben, a married couple who decide to open their marriage as Frances navigates the grief of losing her mother. At first, both seem comfortable with the arrangement, but things become complicated when Ben begins to fall in love with one of their partners. I was really curious to see what the author would do with this concept given that open marriages are QUITE taboo.

What didn’t work for me was that the novel felt heavy-handed and emotionally distant at the same time. I never felt deeply connected to either of the main characters. That disconnect was made worse by the inclusion of multiple POVs that seemed largely unrelated to what the main characters were experiencing. I later read that many of these perspectives were previously published as short stories, and honestly, you can feel that while reading. The narrative felt fragmented, and I found myself wishing for something more cohesive and emotionally grounded.

The author also makes some interesting narrative choices, moving between first and second person perspectives, sometimes with the same characters, which just added to the book feeling generally disjointed.

That said, while this wasn’t a favourite, I would still recommend it to readers who enjoy messy relationship dynamics. The exploration of grief was one of the stronger aspects of the novel, and I can’t say that element wasn’t handled well.

Have you read any books that explore open marriages? I’d love some recommendations, even though I’m pretty sure I’d be rolling my eyes the entire time I’m reading! taken in Messy Times by @everythingshereads

Thank you @simonschusterca for gifting me an early copy of Keeper of Lost Children by Sadeqa Johnson. All opinions are my own.

Unfortunately, this one did not work for me. While the subject matter itself was interesting, I fear it was not enough to make this anything more than an “okay” read.

Keeper of Lost Children by Sadeqa Johnson is a historical novel that follows three connected characters (Ethel, Ozzie, and Sophia) through post–World War II Germany and 1960s America. It centers on the overlooked history of mixed-race “Brown Babies” born to Black American soldiers and German women, many of whom were abandoned and placed in orphanages.

I found this premise to be interesting enough; however, this story was so very low stakes that it lacked the emotional element that makes historical fiction so compelling in nature. There was a lot of telling and very little showing which greatly impacted my reading enjoyment. Everything works out for these characters. There is little to no hardship in their journeys and when a modicum of conflict arises, it is very easily and tidily wrapped up.

I was very disappointed, as I do love this author and would still read anything she writes. I just feel like there was a bit of wasted potential here.

For Black History Month, I want Canadians to realize that anti-Black racism isn’t just an American thing. It’s a NORTH AMERICAN thing.

For centuries, Black scholarship has been documenting the individual and systemic hatred of Black lives in this country. But it is nothing more than screaming into the abyss because we continue to “compare” ourselves to the US.

“The lack of spectacle does not mean innocence!”

Desmond Cole documents just one year of anti-Blackness in Canada in this book. The last chapter made me sick. This entire book made me sick. Thank god for activists like him who refuse to be silenced. taken in Black Lives Matter by @everythingshereads
