This Friday, July 10, we’re partnering with @chicagofire and @runsyyy for a special afternoon of art, music, and the global game ❤️ Join us at @chicagoinrecess for the quarterfinal match between Spain and Belgium as we provide the pre-game soundtrack. 🔊 Introducing our headline DJ for our June 27 event at @chopshopchi -> @realdjlag ‼️🇿🇦 Known globally as the “Gqom King,” DJ Lag is a pioneering South African producer and DJ celebrated for shaping and internationalizing the sound of Gqom—a raw, percussive subgenre of house music that emerged from the coastal city of Durban. Since his teenage years, Lag has broken boundaries both sonically and geographically, becoming one of the most influential figures in global electronic music. Born Lwazi Asanda Gwala, DJ Lag began producing Gqom using FruityLoops while still in school, distributing his early tracks through Durban’s iconic taxi scene in 2012. Just three years later, his rise to the international stage began with a 2015 G-Star Raw x Boiler Room session in Johannesburg. His self-titled EP via London’s Goon Club Allstars the following year marked the start of his ascent into the global electronic elite. By 2017, Pitchfork had dubbed him an “international ambassador for the nerve-shredding thrills of Gqom.” With several global tours under his belt, DJ Lag has played everywhere from Glastonbury and EDC Las Vegas to MTN Bushfire and the main stage at DC-10 Ibiza—a journey that’s earned him the nickname “The International Pantsula,”a nod to both his township roots and his global dominance. Perhaps most famously, DJ Lag co-produced Beyoncé’s “My Power” for The Lion King: The Gift album, later featured in the GRAMMY®-nominated Black Is King visual project. The track—featuring Beyoncé, Busiswa, and Moonchild Sanelly—underscored his global reach and collaborative prowess. As one of South Africa’s most influential electronic artists, DJ Lag continues to push the boundaries of sound and performance.
