Dark humor. It showed up for all of us here at EWT. It’s not for everyone, but any kind of humor can help release stress.
And what a stressful time death is.
It’s scientifically proven.

Science shows that laughing is basically a cheat code for your nervous system.

Here is exactly what happens to your body when you find something hilarious:
⚡️ The 20-Minute Reset: Laughter actually mimics a tiny “fight-or-flight” response. Your heart pumps and muscles contract, but about 20 minutes later? Your heart rate and blood pressure drop below your normal baseline. You enter deep relaxation for up to 45 minutes.
📉 Cortisol Drops Fast: Laughter shuts down your body’s stress response, slashing cortisol (the stress hormone) by over 30%.
🧪 The Brain Chemistry Flip: It stops stress hormones and instantly floods your brain with a “feel-good cocktail” of Endorphins (natural pain killers), Dopamine (joy), and Serotonin (calm).
💡 The Takeaway: Your brain treats laughter as a biological signal that you are safe. It literally forces you to take a cognitive break from anxiety.

We hope this story from @teamcoco and @arnettwill helped release a little stress from your day today. ❤️‍🩹

You are going through so much. It is ok to rest.

You do not need to do more.

Take a minute.

Take a day.

It’s ok.

This is hard.

The beginning of October holds a lot of sadness for me. So this year I wanted to create memories of joy. I said yes to Harry Styles. I said yes to a road trip to Rhode Island. I said yes to dancing and friendships and treacherous cliff walks. I said yes to writing a book and putting it out there for the world. And October became lighter. Thank you @hollysudduth for having a birthday. Thank you to @smccormac for wanting to see Harry in NY with friends, and thank you to life for reminding me that it goes on and can still bring in good things. #dothething #believeinmagic #dontgiveup #findthejoy by @everywidowthing

Today 9 years ago, I found my husband dying on the couch. I performed CPR, called 911, but he never regained consciousness. He died four days later. And grief came flooding in. Messy and rude.
All of life‘s polite rules no longer applied. But nobody gave me permission to take care of myself.

This book is your permission slip, Forget the Thank-You Notes! Filled with short essays, Whit bits, and survival skills when you can’t get off the bathroom floor.
I’m excited to share it with you all. You can find it on Amazon. I also have a link in my profile! 😍

Shout out to Blue Hat Publishing for helping me get my message out there!

Grief isn’t just about the moment someone passes—it’s about the micro-traumas you have to walk through just to get there.
When people talk about loss, they often focus on the after. But they don’t always prepare you for the living nightmare of the before:
💔 Having to break your kids' hearts once with a devastating diagnosis, and then breaking them all over again to tell them it’s terminal.
💔 Watching a strong, vibrant person you love slowly lose their physical body to a cruel, aggressive disease.
💔 The impossible weight of treatment choices, trying everything just to buy a little more time—and carrying the weight of watching them endure the pain of that choice for you.
The loss itself breaks your heart, but watching them suffer pieces of themselves away before they’re even gone? That’s the secondary trauma that stays with you.
If you’ve lived through the agonizing decline of someone you loved, know that your pain isn't just about missing them today—it’s about processing every single trauma it took to reach the end. You aren't alone in holding that heavy, complex grief. 🤍
You can hear Dana's whole story on Episode 24 of Every Widow Thing podcast.

"RIP." Three letters. Type it, hit send, move on.
I know the intent is kind. I know people mean Rest in Peace. But when I posted about my husband’s death and saw "RIP" drop into the comments, it didn't feel comforting—it felt like a slap.
We’ve turned a phrase meant for solemn honor into internet slang. We say "RIP" when we drop a phone, lose a game, or swat a fly. So when those same three letters are left as a comment on the most devastating loss of someone’s life, it can feel painfully lazy and insensitive.
Grief deserves real words, even if they're awkward or imperfect.
Watch the clip to hear why those three letters hit so hard, and let's talk in the comments:
Has a well-meaning comment ever landed completely wrong for you during loss? 👇

Lost for words? Just say something. Even 'I don't know what to say' helps.
Silence can feel isolating after loss.

You may be worried you will say the wrong thing. We’ve already been through the worst. Acknowledgment of that loss can make us feel supported.

Would you agree?

We will never forget. But sometimes do these widows, widowers, mothers, fathers, children, etc, want to grieve alone? Is it exhausting? Or is it comforting?
I can’t imagine to know.
Grief is heavy.
Is it lighter when the whole country feels it too?

I hope so.

This is what we are trying to change! Grief is a universal experience! Everyone will come face to face with it and yet, we are asked to do it quietly.

It’s ok to sit with it. Take it in. Acknowledge it. Trust that time is helping. Stay the course and know that something beautiful is being built inside you.

One day, that grief starts feeling more like the love again. And you have become a stronger more alive version of yourself. ❤️

Of course Dolly would show up. Our loved ones are never truly gone. Their light, their energy, their love for us is always close by. The body dies but they do not. ❤️🦋
