So grateful to the lovely cast and to Zoe (the only crew 😅) for hanging out with me on a Monday afternoon/evening in August and pulling this together ❤️

It feels like a big deal to make your first short after grad school, and I’m so happy these folks were up for this low (no?) budget ride 🥳

I hope you enjoy & please share widely with anyone in your life who needs a little push towards the polling place or ballot box 😎

UPDATES!! I’ve had an amazing time traipsing from Maine to London to Bologna (with a quick stop in Boston to visit bestie @mishahooda 🥰)

I feel SO lucky to have attended @fringefilmfest and @someprefercake 🥹 it’s such a long process to submit to festivals and wait and wait and wait (and get rejected again and again), and when you finally get to go it’s like sh*t it’s actually all worth it!! I met so many cool folks, filmmakers, programmers, organizers, and audience members, and I sincerely hope to return to these festivals again soon ❤️

It was indescribably affirming to sit in an almost full 500 seat theater watching @smarrit_film, hearing people laugh at the jokes and feeling their excitement 😭

Then I got briefly sick because too much fun I guess…but the work continues!! 😎

I’ll be back in LA on Oct 19 🥳🥳 please hire me 🤓 and let’s hang out!

Bonus photo of me & new bestie Bruno (@meg_subsick) - sorryyyy @pearlandoaks 😅

Alsooo Smarrit* is finally on Letterboxd if anyone would like to log or review 👀👀👀

Hope y’all enjoy my silly little drawingssss 🤭 by @evilianovella

Smarrit* is headed to Bologna!! Grazie @someprefercake for the selection ❤️ so excited to screen at Nuovo Cinema Nosadella on September 19th at 10am 🥳 and hey, tickets include breakfast, so movies + breakfast, I mean, what could be better??

I will also participate in a talk about making LBT* shorts at 12:30 🤓

Always grateful for an excuse to go home (to Bologna) 🥹 scroll to the end for the moodiest Bologna sky you’ve ever seen, and a bonus moody train photo)

Thank you again to the @smarrit_film cast & crew ❤️

Some updates!!
TLDR - living in east LA now, working on some things, looking for more work, more travel in the works, hmu for work & non-work because fun is important too 😎 & sharing drawings because i like making them by @evilianovella

(English) What a pleasure and a delight to spend 3 days at @divineqff this weekend!! So grateful to the hosts and the whole team for being so lovely, for asking thoughtful questions in the Q&A, and most importantly for giving Smarrit* its world premiere in Italy 🥳❤️ (and so honored to hear the curation team was karaoke-ing to the song 😂)

Grateful for all the films, the new friends, the cute dogs, and the tasty food at @viabaltea3!! also had the chance to visit the TV&Radio museum & saw props from the very campy albero azzurro show, which most definitely influenced the filmmaker I am today 😅 an extra special thanks to my parents who came along for the ride 🥹 and an extra extra special thanks to the @smarrit_film team - none of this would have been possible without you ❤️❤️❤️

(Italiano)

(This is the most you’ll see my face in an Instagram post in probably a very long time 😅)

IT

EN
A surreal night, an out-of-place Dante Alighieri, and a language waiting to be reinvented ✨
SMARRIT* by Emilia Novella Figliomeni follows Filo and Diego on their last night together before a return home, moving through identity, language, and non-binary possibilities between infernal karaoke bars and dissident conversations. An ironic and visionary short film about the power of words and the freedom to name oneself.

🎬 See you on Sunday, May 17 at 3:30 PM at Via Baltea!

#DivineQFF #QueerCinema #FilmFestival #Torino #QueerCulture by @evilianovella

So excited to finally be able to announce Smarrit*’s world premiere at the 10th edition of Divine Queer Film Festival in Torino, Italy!! 🥳🥳🥳

Our film will be screening on Sunday, May 17th @ 4pm at the Via Baltea cultural center in Torino.

All screenings are free to attend!! Check out the full program at @divineqff

It is truly so special to get to premiere the film in Italy, as the film is also about doing what you need to do to make the journey home (to Italy) possible. While some languages may be binary, they don’t have to be. Let’s continue to break the mold, invent new words and structures, and put time and effort into thinking about how our language can make space for everyone.

Thank you again to the incredible team that helped bring this story to life. It would not exist without you ❤️ And thank you to @divineqff for giving us the chance to share it with an audience!
