Wheel Straightening – What Actually Happens? A buckled wheel doesn’t always need replacing. In many cases, it can be straightened and brought back within, or very close to, the manufacturer’s tolerances. The first step is removing the tyre so the wheel can be properly inspected. We then measure the wheel to find the high and low spots and work out exactly where it has distorted. The affected area is heated in a controlled way before the wheel is gradually worked back into shape using the hydraulic rams on our wheel straightening machine. The wheel is checked and measured throughout the process rather than simply being pushed until it looks straight. A buckled wheel can cause more problems than just a vibration through the steering wheel. Depending on how badly it is damaged, it can contribute to: Uneven or premature tyre wear Difficulty balancing the wheel correctly Air leaks around the tyre bead Extra stress on wheel bearings and suspension components Vibration through the steering wheel or vehicle MOT failure if the wheel is excessively distorted or considered unsafe Not every damaged wheel can or should be repaired, but we can successfully straighten a large percentage of the buckled wheels we see. DID YOU KNOW? PART WORN TYRES AREN’T ALWAYS AS CHEAP AS YOU THINK We’re not here to tell people not to buy part worn tyres. We actually used to sell them ourselves. But over the years, the gap between the cost of a decent part worn tyre and a brand-new tyre has become much smaller. Here are some genuine examples: 205/55 R16 Part worn: £40 Brand new: from £60 225/40 R18 Part worn: £45 Brand new: from £65 235/35 R19 Part worn: £50 Brand new: from £70 That’s only around £20 more for a brand-new tyre. So what are you actually getting for that extra £20? A new tyre gives you 100% of its tread life, known history, consistent condition and no previous repairs or damage. A part worn tyre may already have used a significant amount of its usable tread. It has also been removed from another vehicle, and you don’t necessarily know its full history. There are reputable part worn tyre suppliers who inspect tyres properly and follow the required standards. Unfortunately, we also see tyres that have previously been repaired in areas where they should not have been repaired, including too close to the sidewall. The important point is that some of these repairs or internal issues may not be obvious when looking at the tyre from the outside. We know this from experience because we used to sell part worn tyres ourselves. As good-quality part worn tyres became harder for us to source and new tyre prices became increasingly competitive, we made the decision to stop selling part worn tyres altogether. For us, saving around £20 simply stopped making sense when the alternative was a brand-new tyre with its full usable life ahead of it.
