Engineers Without Borders USA (EWB-USA) is a nonprofit humanitarian organization.

POSTS STORIES REELS

Drones, satellites and 9,000-foot field sites made for quite a classroom. 🛰️

At EWB-USA’s first GIS/Geospatial Drone & GNSS Institute, early-career engineers from the U.S. and Guatemala gained hands-on geospatial skills while producing data that real communities need. Thank you to Trimble for investing in the future of humanitarian engineering.

Swipe to see what they learned. 👉

Attending the UNC Water and Health Conference? Join us this afternoon!

Today, Carlos Aguilera, Wilmer Santacruz and Felipe Vasquez of our partner Fundación Ingenieros en Acción–Ecuador (@FIEA_Ecuador) will present with EWB-USA Chief Programs Officer Melissa Montgomery:

📍 “Evidence-Based Resilience: WASH FIT Assessment and Post-Disaster Health Recovery in Ecuador”
🕒 3:15–4:30 pm ET | Mountain Laurel Room (4th presentation in the session)

In 2022–2023, FIEA Ecuador partnered with Ecuador’s Ministry of Public Health to assess water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) conditions in 48 rural health facilities using the WHO/UNICEF WASH FIT tool. The findings were stark. No facility had basic sanitation service, and nearly 80% did no routine water quality monitoring.

When a devastating landslide hit Alausí in 2023, that evidence became a roadmap. It’s now guiding the design of a new health center and training for community health technicians, many of whom serve Indigenous communities in their own languages.

Come hear how assessment data can drive real recovery and lasting resilience. 💧

Final call! 📣 Only 5 days left to submit your proposal for the 2027 EWB-USA Conference.

Proposals close this Saturday, October 31. This is your chance to help shape our 25th anniversary celebration in St. Louis, March 4–6, 2027, by sharing the projects, partnerships, and lessons learned that have defined your EWB-USA experience.

Students, recent graduates, industry professionals, faculty, and alumni are all welcome to submit. Your proposal doesn't need to be perfect, and your presenter list doesn't need to be final. Just bring a summary of 250 words or less, 2–3 key takeaways, and a session track that fits your idea.

Don't let the deadline pass you by. Submit your proposal today at the link in our bio!

Before you can design a water system, you need to understand the land it runs on. 🗺️

This summer, volunteers at EWB-USA’s first GIS/Geospatial Drone & GNSS Institute mapped 10 communities in Guatemala in collaboration with Trimble. Their high-resolution maps and terrain models now give engineers what they need to design water systems for families who walk for water today.

Swipe to meet the communities behind the data. 👉

Applications for the David A. Rock Fellowship for Humanitarian Engineering close tomorrow, October 23.

If you've been considering applying, now is the time. This 9-week learning experience gives early-career professionals the chance to:

→ Train with EWB-USA staff in Denver
→ Learn alongside in-country partners on community-centered infrastructure projects in Uganda or Ecuador
→ Share their experience at the 2027 EWB-USA National Conference

EWB-USA funds fellows' education and training, including most fellowship-related travel expenses. The fellowship runs January 4 – March 7, 2027.

Apply today at the link in our bio.

Questions? Contact Hillary Brown at hillary.brown@ewb-usa.org.

Please help us spread the word by sharing this with your network before the deadline.

Water challenges across the American West are intensifying, and the people managing them need better data. 💧

Join us for the next Career Connections session on Thursday, October 22 at 4:00 PM MT with @weareolsson: Data-Driven Water Resources Solution for the American West.

🔹 Jim Schneider, Ph.D., a Technical Expert at Olsson and former Deputy Director of the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources, will share the firm’s innovative work in groundwater management. He’ll show how data-driven tools help water managers track supply and use, evaluate their options, and plan for a sustainable water future.

🔹 Kelsey Cox, Olsson’s Campus Recruiter, will join to talk about the Olsson's student program and what it takes to get started there.

If you’re curious about a career at the intersection of groundwater science, data, and policy, this is your chance to ask the experts what that work looks like.

Free. Virtual. Open to all EWB-USA volunteers. Register now, link in bio 🔗

Water fuels every facet of our lives. A day without water is a day without:

☕️ morning coffee from your neighborhood cafe
🚿 bath time for your little ones
🍝 dinner with friends
Water powers people. Let’s not take it for granted.

On October 15, #ImagineADayWithoutWater reminds us how water shows up for all of us–everywhere, every day.💧 by @ewbusa

Our final Advice to My First-Year Self video features Katie Byrnes, and her first tip is to try everything. 🎉

Katie graduated from Miami University in 2018 and now works for CDM Smith in New York City. Her advice to her freshman self:

1️⃣ Explore first, then commit. Spend your first semester trying every club, team and organization that sounds exciting. Then pick one or two and go all in: take on leadership roles and give them your time. For Katie, that was EWB-USA.

2️⃣ Go to office hours. Professors hold them for a reason, and Katie wishes she’d used them sooner.

Committing to EWB-USA paid off. Katie joined her chapter’s Rwanda program as a first-year student, and more than a decade later she’s still involved as a mentor. Along the way she has helped student chapters at three universities, received EWB-USA’s David Sacco Mentorship Fund Award, and found her way into a career in environmental engineering. 💧

Ready to go all in on your own EWB-USA experience? Join our free, virtual Career Connections series, open to all EWB-USA volunteers.

📅 Tomorrow, Thursday, Oct 15, 4pm MT: We’re joined by Gerard Dalziel, EWB-USA’s former Chief Engineer.
