🎥 What does nature mean to communities across the Asia Pacific who are on the frontlines of climate change?

For many, nature is more than just a resource — it’s protection, livelihood and a way of life.

Through the Building Community Resilience to Natural Disasters (BCRND) programme, we’re harnessing the power of nature to help communities prepare for, withstand and recover from natural hazards.

From restoring mangroves and coral reefs, to enabling sustainable livelihoods and disaster preparedness – the programme aims to builds long-term resilience across the Asia Pacific region.

Led from the UAE by Emirates Nature-WWF, in partnership with WWF International @wwf and the @ifrc, BCRND is a flagship initiative that puts people and ecosystems at the heart of climate adaptation.

Under the Directive of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE 🇦🇪, the UAE Aid Agency has committed USD 10 million to the Building Community Resilience to Natural Disasters Programme — a joint initiative by Emirates Nature–WWF, WWF International @wwf, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (@ifrc)

Unveiled at the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 in Abu Dhabi, this landmark programme harnesses the power of nature-based solutions to help communities across Asia and the Pacific prepare for and withstand natural hazards — ensuring that nature remains humanity’s first line of defence. 🌿💧

This commitment reflects the UAE’s visionary leadership and enduring belief that resilience begins within communities — turning readiness into strength, and collaboration into lasting impact for both people and planet.

بتوجيهات صاحب السمو الشيخ محمد بن زايد آل نهيان، رئيس الدولة “ حفظه الله” أعلنت دولة الإمارات عبر وكالة الإمارات للمساعدات الدولية عن تخصيصها 10 ملايين دولار أمريكي، لصالح جمعية الإمارات للطبيعة لإطلاق برنامج تعزيز قدرة المجتمعات على التكيف مع الكوارث الطبيعية، وهو مبادرة مشتركة بين جمعية الإمارات للطبيعة والصندوق العالمي للطبيعة والاتحاد الدولي للصليب الأحمر والهلال الأحمر
جاء ذلك خلال فعاليات المؤتمر العالمي للحفاظ على الطبيعة 2025، يسعى البرنامج الرائد إلى تسخير الحلول القائمة على الطبيعة لزيادة قدرة المجتمعات على مواجهة المخاطر الطبيعية، وتعزيز جاهزيتها، وخلق مصادر دخل مستدامة

يعبر هذا الالتزام عن رؤية القيادة الإماراتية الرشيدة وإيمانها العميق بأن الصمود يبدأ من المجتمعات نفسها حيث تتحول الجاهزية إلى قوة، والتعاون إلى أثر مستدام يعود بالنفع على الإنسان والبيئة معًا.

We are proud to announce the launch of the Building Community Resilience to Natural Disasters (BCRND)programme — a major new initiative led by Emirates Nature–WWF in collaboration with WWF International @wwf and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (@ifrc)

Unveiled today at the IUCN World Conservation Congress @iucn_congress 2025 in Abu Dhabi, the programme is anchored by a USD 10 million commitment from the UAE Aid Agency, made under the Directive of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.

The BCRND programme harnesses the power of nature to help communities prepare for, withstand, and recover from natural hazards — strengthening ecosystems, livelihoods, and disaster preparedness across the Asia-Pacific region. 🌊🌾🌺 The programme was developed in collaboration with WWF AP30 - a coalition of 30 WWF offices across Asia Pacific.

This anchor funding from the UAE sets the stage for public, private and philanthropic partners to join us in scaling the programme across the region — ensuring that nature remains humanity’s first line of defence.

Thirteen years ago I walked into Wadi Wurayah for the first time. Today it stands inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. 🏔️💚

Thirteen years of camera traps strapped to boulders on impossible slopes. Of surveys in wadi pools at first light, when the water is still cold and the dragonflies haven't woken up. Of nights waiting for a caracal that never showed, and mornings when it did. Of students who arrived certain the mountains were empty rock, and left knowing they were standing in one of the richest landscapes in Arabia.

This wadi holds species found nowhere else on Earth, the Arabian Tahr, the Dragonflies, the Damselflies that are unique to this wadi. Every one of them was documented by someone willing to climb, wait, and look carefully. That is what conservation actually is: patience, repeated for years.

The UAE's first mountain protected area. Ramsar Site in 2010. UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2018. And now, World Heritage site. That progression is not luck, it is the result of a vision held steadily over decades.

My deepest congratulations and gratitude to the Fujairah Environment Authority whose visionary leadership committed to protecting these mountains. And to the partnership behind this park, the Fujairah Environment Authority and Emirates Nature-WWF, through every season, every survey, every management plan: this is what a decade of working side by side looks like, and I am proud to be part of this whole journey along with my wonderful and passionate colleagues.

To every volunteer, researcher, student, teacher and citizen scientist who ever gave a day or a weekend to this wadi, you counted, you recorded, you carried the gear, up the slope. Your names may not be on the inscription, but this recognition is built on your hours. Thank you. 🙏

The recognition is global.

على مدار أكثر من عقدين من الزمان، عملت جمعية الإمارات للطبيعة جنباً إلى جنب مع هيئة الفجيرة للبيئة؛ لدراسة وإدارة وحماية الأنظمة البيئية الفريدة والتنوع البيولوجي الغني في وادي الوريعة.

يعكس هذا التكريم والاعتراف العالمي قيمة الجهود المشتركة المتواصلة التي بذلها الباحثون، وأفراد المجتمع المحلي، والمتطوعون، وشركاؤنا المخلصون لحماية هذه الطبيعة الاستثنائية وصونها للأجيال القادمة.

For more than two decades, Emirates Nature-WWF has worked alongside the Fujairah Environment Authority to study, manage and protect Wadi Wurayah’s unique ecosystems and biodiversity.

This recognition highlights the importance of the collective efforts of researchers, local communities, citizen scientists and partners working to protect and conserve this remarkable landscape.

🌿 A wonderful day spent in the mangroves of Al Rams, learning about these vital ecosystems and playing a role in protecting them.

The Kayak for Conservation event, organised by Emirates Nature-WWF and Emirates Council for Balanced Development @ecbduae , brought together local community members to help protect the environment. Together, participants removed more than 20 kilograms of litter from the coastal lagoon, while categorising and recording each item to generate valuable data that can inform future policy and decision-making.
