So maybe you noticed I haven’t been so active on here the past two weeks… it’s because I WENT TO EGYPT (please read that as excited yelling and not angry yelling). This fulfilled a dream I didn’t have because I didn’t know it was even within the realm of possibility for me.

I was that nerdy child “researching” the Egyptian pantheon on angelfire sites and now I’m an archaeologist and art historian still completely obsessed with the ancient world. Both versions of me are pinching themselves and in total disbelief at all that I did.

While I was there, I read 50 pages total. And I wouldn’t change that at all.

Now that I’m home, I’ll be back on booksta like normal, even if I am jet lagged ☺️

I went a little overboard on book-buying this trip… but I was able to purchase books at Diwan in Zamalek and the library of Alexandria! How cool is that?

I’m particularly looking forward to reading Cairo Circles, The Threshold, and Death Comes as the End.

Review of ☕️ If an Egyptian Cannot Speak English 👜 by Noor Naga

An Egyptian-American woman out of college moves to Cairo looking for a place to call home and start fresh. There she meets a photographer from rural Egypt and the two begin a complicated romance despite their wildly different backgrounds.

Where to even start? This book came highly recommended by bookstagrammers and irl friends whose opinions I deeply respect, and yet I was unprepared for just how earthshaking it was. As I uncovered parts of the characters’ lives and witnessed their interpersonal dynamics through the pages, I felt I had a good grasp on what was going on. Then, with the final part, I was thrown into the deep end and forced to grapple with larger issues.

I’m struggling to adequately express just how profound this book is, but please, pick it up. Give it a read. Think about it for a good, long time.

For as much as I read this September, there were a ton of books I just could not finish. I’m sure some of these are due to not being in the right mindset for them.

Somehow September was a record month for me! I can’t believe I finished so many books considering how off I felt reading-wise. I’d say the standouts were Yellowface, Honey, Old Wives’ Tales, and If an Egyptian Cannot Speak English.

Καλό σαββατοκύριακο! Happy weekend! I’m currently reading three books because I have a hyperspecific reading schedule. I read one book during the day, a physical book at night (good sleep hygiene is necessary for us millennials, amirite?), and one audiobook to listen to while I craft, cook dinner, get ready, or walk.

I’m enjoying all three books so far! My specific thoughts are in the slides.

And lastly, a shoutout to @_accordingtocarina for the fantastic audiobook recs she left on my post from a few weeks ago. I’ve read two (Carrie Soto is Back & Murder on Sex Island) and they’ve both been hits! If you haven’t already, go give her a follow!

🔪Review of Victorian Psycho by Virginia Feito👁️

Winifred (Fred) is a proto-feminist governess in Victorian England who’s just been hired to take care of two spoiled children… and she has fantasies of brutally murdering everyone around her. Turns out, Fred has a history of murdering the people she’s worked for and getting away with it. Considering this new family and their friends are despicable, will she kill them next?

This book is OFF THE WALL. It is filled with completely outrageous and heinous murders, so much gore, and….. laughs? Honestly I’ve questioned if I also have something off about me because I laughed a lot. Fred’s commentary is deeply caustic and the characters just do the shittiest things.

This earned 3 stars for me because, though I thoroughly enjoyed it (again, am I okay???), I think the whole thing was pretty superficially entertaining. Not a bad thing, just not what I usually love in a book.
