OVERLAND PARK TRENCH COLLAPSE TRAPS WORKER, FOUR FIRE AGENCIES AND MED-ACT RUSH TO FREE HIM

A construction worker is free after being trapped in a trench at a construction site near 159th Street and Mission Road in Overland Park, pulled out breathing and talking after responders from four fire agencies and Johnson County MED-ACT rushed to the scene. The man, believed to be in his 30s, was connecting a sewer line when the ground gave way around noon on Tuesday.

The collapse happened in the 4000 block of West 159th Place, according to KMBC. His co-workers called 911 immediately after the trench caved in, and FOX4 Kansas City reports that four fire agencies—Overland Park, Olathe, Leawood and Johnson County Consolidated Fire District 2—along with Johnson County MED-ACT arrived at the scene to help.

Crews Brace Trench Walls to Reach Trapped Worker
Once on site, rescue teams worked to shore up the unstable trench walls so they could safely free the man, per the same FOX4 account. He stayed responsive throughout the ordeal, and KCTV5 reports he was transported to an area hospital still talking. Fire officials told KMBC the man was stable after being pulled from the trench.

KSHB 41 Kansas City reported that Johnson County rescue crews were called to the scene Tuesday afternoon, noting that crews were dispatched shortly after noon to handle the collapse. Its account aligns with other local coverage describing the worker as breathing and talking as rescuers freed him.

#trenchsafetytuesday brought to you by @milania_corp this week… we in downtown Dover NH doing a nighttime water disconnection for one of our demo partners so they can get their demolition permit.

I spent half my day going over what I needed. In theory it’s a simple job… open the street - dig down - set the box - turn off the corp - disconnect the line - go home.

And as I gave myself the pre game speech and went through my mental checklist that’s what stuck with me - GO HOME

Everyone working with me tonight has someone expecting them home .. a fiancé, a daughter, a someone
It’s not hard to plan the work, it’s actually quite simple ..
if I do my job, everyone goes home and we play again tomorrow.

Cal/OSHA investigates deadly trench collapse in Stockton, California

Authorities have identified the two men who died in a trench collapse at a construction site in Stockton as 49-year-old Raul Zepeda of Lodi and 34-year-old Raul Cristostomo De La Cruz of Stockton.

Surveillance video obtained by KCRA 3 shows firefighters arriving at the site Saturday morning, and hours later, the men were found dead.

Cal/OSHA is now leading an inspection to determine what caused the collapse.

"Cal/OSHA will actually lead the investigation. For us, there will be interviews of what we did when we showed up, what we did, what we saw, and then, for the most part, it's going to be talking to the owners, talking to – if there was a construction company talking to – that construction company and finding out what happened," said Erik Patten of the Stockton Fire Department.

Stockton firefighters responded to the 7900 block of North El Dorado Street on Saturday after reports of two people trapped underground.

"In this case, it appears that when they entered the hole, the sides of the trench actually collapsed in on top of them and burying them under dirt and debris," Patten said.

The men had not been seen since Friday evening.

For firefighters, recovery efforts in situations like this require crews to protect themselves from the same dangers.

"One of the things that we worry about is obviously further injury to anybody, any victim that's down in the hole, but also, injury to ourselves, so we have to be very cautious when we need to enter. We need to take a lot of precautions before we go into any situation that could harm us," Patten said.

It remains unclear whether the men were hired independently or were working with a construction company.

A 34 year old man died in Texas last week .. 2 other people were recovered from other collapses recently as well..

I haven’t seen any additional information just that investigations were ongoing

This is the time of year everyone pushes - it’s the busiest part of the season. Whether or not these jobs had shoring is always a question .. one picture I saw they didn’t.

As a business owner I’m currently feeling the crunch to get shit done- schedules starting to overlap, one unknown throws you off by a day or two and that snowballs into other schedules.

Take the time with your crews to work safe .. complacency is the true killer… but use a trenchbox

Someone’s expecting you home 🫡

NORTH EAST — A worker was airlifted from the North East High School/North East Middle School construction site to a regional trauma center Monday, after a trench collapsed and trapped him in waist-high dirt, according to the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office.

It took first responders about 15 minutes to extricate the worker, whom CCSO officials identified only as a 37-year-old man, police reported.

A Maryland State Police helicopter crew flew the man from the construction site in the 300 block of Irishtown Road to University of Maryland’s Shock Trauma Unit in Baltimore, where he received medical treatment for what investigators described as “non-life-threatening” injuries, according to Capt. Michael Holmes, a CCSO spokesman.

As of Tuesday, an update on the injured construction worker’s medical condition was unavailable.

The 911 call regarding a workplace accident came at 12:57 p.m. Monday, prompting CCSO deputies to rush to the construction site along with medical and rescue first responders, police said. Based on the preliminary investigation, a trench collapsed, leaving the worker trapped in dirt piled to about his waist, policed added.

The Maryland Occupational Safety and Health was contacted, police reported.

Under construction on a 25-acre parcel of land along Irishtown Road, adjacent to the current North East high school, the new 294,000-square-foot high school and middle school building will accommodate a total of 2,000 students and is scheduled to open in July 2027. The construction project will cost between $185 million and $190 million.

Two construction workers in Franklin are free after being trapped in a trench on Otter Street.

The accident involving two workmen from Mortimer's Excavating occurred at a construction site for the A-108 sewer line replacement project on Otter Street near the intersection with West Park Street at around 11:03 a.m., according to a press release from Franklin Fire Department Chief Andrew Eckel.

"The outside edge of the trench that the crew was working on had collapsed as they were standing on it, sending the two workmen down into a hole several feet deep and partially burying them in dirt," Eckel said. "This area that collapsed was just outside the trench box being used to hold up the sides of the open trench as the soil in this area is very sandy."

According to Eckel, one of the workers was buried up to his waist. The other was trapped by his leg. Two sewer vacuum trucks — one from Guyer Brothers and the other from the City of Franklin Sewer Department — were used to help remove the dirt trapping the workers. Oil City Fire Department was on the scene as well to provide Urban Search & Rescue equipment and personnel.

The Franklin Fire Department, Franklin Police Department, Franklin Water Department, Franklin Sewer Department, Community Ambulance Service, STAT MedEvac and Oil City Fire Department responded to the scene.

The workers were freed from the soil by 12:25 p.m. One of the workers was transported by Community Ambulance Service for medical evaluation, Eckel said. The other refused treatment.

Emergency crews cleared the scene by 1:15 p.m.

I’ve got alot of DMs of trench accidents lately… This is a trench box .. use one

The “technology” isn’t new. It’s only gotten better. They make a box or a slide rail system for anything that you need to put in the ground…

they literally have anything that you could possibly need…

Someone is expecting you home

In just two days in Michigan, three trench collapses occurred on separate construction sites in the Detroit metro area — two of them in the same county and the other in a neighboring area.

A worker died in one of the cave-ins, and two workers were injured in the others.

Here’s a timeline of the three trench collapses between June 30 and July 1:

June 30 — A 35-year-old man was listed in stable condition after being rescued from a trench collapse at a construction site in Oxford Township, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

Workers were installing field tile for a septic system when the man entered the trench to glue pipe together, the Sheriff’s Office reports. A trench wall collapsed, burying him beneath the soil.

Deputies and firefighters arrived at 9:25 a.m. and extricated the worker. He was transported to McLaren Oakland Hospital, where he was in stable condition undergoing further evaluation.

July 1 — A 25-year-old man was listed in stable condition after being injured in a trench collapse at a new subdivision under construction in Orion Township.

A subcontractor was excavating for a sewer installation while a worker was inside a trench box. The ground surrounding the trench box gave way and trapped him below the waist.
Coworkers and first responders freed the man at about 9:40 a.m. He suffered injuries to both lower extremities and was transported to McLaren Oakland Hospital.

July 1 — That afternoon, a 30-year-old man died in a trench collapse in Handy Township in nearby Livingston County.

Workers were installing underground tanks when he became trapped and buried. He was pulled from the trench but was pronounced dead at the scene, according to news reports.

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the three incidents.

1 dead 2 injured in three separate trench collapses last week.

The numbers are tipping back up. I believe we have met or exceeded the number of fatalities in 2025 already this year… Complacency kills. Poor planning kills.
