Here’s a 33mm Patek Philippe Grand Ellipse ref.3589/1 commissioned by Colonel Muammar Gaddafi as part of a series of watches to commemorate the 1978 Libyan Labour Day. The pieces were designed in white gold with a striking “pale green” hard-stone dial that is inspired by the colour of Gaddafi’s Green Book. Each watch carries a quote in either Arabic or English. The one we have pictured here quotes: “The house belongs to its resident, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi”. The collection was dispersed amongst his associates and only a handful have resurfaced over the years. #gaddafi taken in دبي by @excellencebydanny

Would you believe me if I told you this Nautilus only set you back 20,780 CHF in the 80s? Well the proof is here with the original purchase invoice and original paperwork with the retailer’s name- Gübelin- printed on the dial to add some extra sauce. Nicknamed the “Jumbo” because of its 42mm case size, this made it difficult to sell in those days so the production run was very small making it a very rare piece today. Take a look at this orange Patek Philippe Aquanaut Chronograph Ref. 5968A. Released in 2018, it was launched a year before the Singapore edition that we previously sold. Don’t be fooled by its casual demeanour, this model packs a punch in functionality. Not only can it be used for time and date, but it also offers a self-winding flyback chronograph that allows a hand reset without having to pause first. Patek have gone past sporty casual with this model and delivered a very cool 42mm piece with comfortable rubber straps. The black embossed dial sits beautifully in its stainless steel bezel and small orange features pop in contrast. #5968a taken in Burlington Arcade by @excellencebydanny

In 2004, Rolex launched some crazy watches that were pretty out of the ordinary such as the infamous Daytona that Nicolas Cage was seen wearing. There were a bunch of variations for the white gold DateJust too that came with serial numbers that were added to the “Carrure” which was a first for the model. Some models were under the radar and others were super loud, they barely sold which meant not many were produced. Here’s one in white gold with a pavé diamond dial that was made for the 116189 model.
