The future looks BRILLIANT.

A superb set of first caps for several young USA players this match, and they really made their presence felt. Some of these guys aren’t even old enough to buy a drink in the States, but they took on defenders with the courage of a seasoned veteran.

Shoutout to the experienced members taking the young cats under their wing and encouraging them. The old protect the young, and then the young protect the old. This is the way. When you’re cutting up like this and your average squad age is 23, there’s a lot that can be said. I’m trending towards the positive things that can be said 😂

U20 Women’s World Cup Quarterfinal between Colombia and Nigeria.

There’s something about a rainy environment that kind of ramps up the intensity of the game. Nigeria had this one controlled in my eyes for a good portion of the match. They seemed to snuff out any threats pretty handily and get in the final third often. But Colombia came with an inextinguishable fire. Nothing fazed them the entire 90. Ironically the rain only served to fan their flame.

In the second half, Colombia kept pushing forward and seeing what they could generate. Nigeria received an unfortunate red card that gave all of the momentum to la selección cafetera. And what happened after was a cathartic moment. In stoppage time, Valerin Loboa got her feet on a through ball and took it in stride, launching a shot at the keeper, but the deflection came right back to her and she would not be denied. Sliding into goal to guarantee the score, and yelling out a triumphant roar as she sprinted towards the Colombia supporters who’d traveled to Poland. What a feeling. A winner in stoppage time? U20 Women’s World Cup Quarterfinal between North Korea and Canada.

This one hit different for me. I was a few seconds late to get a Starting XI photo for North Korea, they waited for me to get the photo. But I was kind of nervous. I was irrationally scared they’d find out I’m from South Korea and chastise me for it. “남한 새끼..” but obviously I didn’t get so much as a glance from anyone on that side. I have never met anyone from North Korea and this is as close as I ever got. I truly wondered what regular North Korean citizens thought of us from the South. All of what they’re told to say and believe in public by the state is one thing, but it’s never the full story behind closed doors is it? I don’t know.

North Korea were unrelenting, super disciplined, and honestly, terrifying. On every ball headed away by their back line, you could hear them shriek like ghosts. They had chance after chance. Much respect to Canada’s goalkeeper, but with the amount of shots demanding her attention, some of them were going to cause trouble. Putting Canada under nearly constant pressure, North Korea went up 2-0, which would’ve been 3-0 if not for a disallowed goal. They really put their heads down and did not let off of the gas pedal.

When I say where I was born, I always just say “Korea” first. North and South are the same people, divided by a border and ideology. Seeing this U20 side celebrate each other and run to their manager, who smiled and embraced them like a father, well I felt that wasn’t far off from my memories of me and my parents doing the same. I even felt a little proud of them on the pitch right then and there. Because I think a lot of Koreans hope for reunification one day. Geopolitics have more than complicated the timeline for that, but hopefully in my lifetime that happens.

The highest attendance at a rugby match in US history. And personally the first organized rugby match I’ve ever been to.

What a brutal sport that requires such a high level of fitness and strength. These guys run at each other at full force, get thrown to the ground and get back up and have to sprint, but for 40 minutes straight per half.

Baltimore was buzzing with green and yellow. I don’t think anyone around here was expecting how many South Africa supporters there were here. I heard a lot of people traveled for the match too?

Every hit, every scrum won, the crowd responded thunderously. Hair-raising, adrenaline-filled experience to be real.

South Africa won their final matchup in convincing fashion. They responded to every New Zealand try with their own. M&T Bank Stadium was buzzing. I can’t wait for this rivalry to come back to the states. taken in M&T Bank Stadium by @exclusiveaccessnet

Haere mai.

The All Blacks really pulled up to Maryland. It was a true privilege for them be in our backyard. A legendary squad that did not disappoint. I spent a good bit of time in Aotearoa in the past, and would not have appreciated this moment if not for those roadies back then.

The Haka was truly a showstopper like I always thought it would be. Hearing and seeing the ferocity of these folks had me ready to run through two walls. Despite the 68,000 people here mostly supporting South Africa, everyone revered and celebrated this pregame ritual.

New Zealand is a nation of only 5 million people, where sheep outnumber humans, but they always punch way above their weight. My experience with Māori, and honestly most kiwis in general, was that they were as kind as can be, but mistaking their kindness for weakness would be a grave mistake. Seeing these rugby players hit each other endlessly and then all shake hands and embrace each other afterwards reminded me of that. True strength is having the power to absolutely destroy someone, but having the restraint to not abuse that power, to not have to advertise how tough you are.
