POV: Your 20’s are just figuring it out as you go.

I found myself being easily drained by people around me, and I realised I have entered empathy burnout. I no longer show up for everyone even when my cup is empty, I did for so many people and most of them didn’t deserve it. Taking care of myself before I take care of others takes priority.

Yes, we need to inconvenience ourselves for people but it has to be for people that would do the same for you.

I quit being stuck in the past years ago.

And somewhere along the way, I realised not everyone around me had.

When you carry unprocessed pain, trauma or resentment for too long, eventually it leaks into your present. It can look like poor communication, defensiveness, insecurity, comparison, isolation, suppressed anger or struggling to maintain relationships with people in different phases of life.

I say this without judgment because I used to be that person too.

I always remind myself: pretty girls don’t let the past become their personality. They process it, learn from it and level up.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realised people have very different relationships with growth. Some need to make the mistake themselves before learning. Some cut people off after one mistake instead of leaving room for accountability and repair. Others suppress everything until it becomes an explosion or defensiveness.

Obviously, grace has limits. Some behaviours warrant walking away, and when a mistake becomes a pattern, boundaries are necessary.

But not every mistake requires an ending.

People ask me, “How are you so patient?”

Because people require grace.

Handling my emotions better than someone else doesn’t make me better than them. It simply means that’s an area I’ve learned to navigate differently.

I used to let my past consume my present. I isolated myself and didn’t always show up for the people around me.

Then I realised: I needed grace while I was growing too.

So I stopped expecting everyone I love to grow at the same pace as me.

Give people grace while they grow, but don’t let their refusal to grow stop you from becoming who you’re supposed to be.

Discipline has taken me places motivation never could. 🤍

i’m learning that becoming the person i want to be has less to do with how motivated i feel and everything to do with whether i’m willing to keep showing up when i don’t feel like it.

not every day will be productive. not every day will feel inspiring. sometimes showing up looks different, but i never want to stop showing up for myself. by @exclusivelybea
