Twenty-five years ago today I was driving a rented Dodge Neon from my dealership to work. I had just dropped off my very nice, relatively new truck because its transmission was scheduled to be rebuilt. I was seriously irritated about two things: having to rebuild the transmission on a relatively new truck, and the fact that Enterprise Rent-A-Car had given me a Dodge Neon.

I turned on the radio to the local rock station as I sat there thinking about all of this misfortune. The local radio host, Elliot in the Morning, for those in the DC area, was describing what they were watching on TV. It appeared that a plane, maybe a small plane, had flown into one of the Twin Towers. I continued to listen as they described a second plane flying into the second tower as I pulled into the parking lot at work.

I went inside and joined the rest of my coworkers in the break room. We watched the towers smoking until they ultimately collapsed. Everyone was in complete shock. Because my office was on one of the flight paths to Washington Dulles, our director came in and said they were closing the building and we were being evacuated.

It had to have been one of the weirdest drives of my life in that rented Enterprise Neon. There was a lot more traffic than normal. Each of us sat in our cars and looked at one another, wondering what the other was thinking. Soon the skies around Washington Dulles, usually full of planes landing and taking off, were clear, except for the occasional F-16 roaring overhead.

I will never forget. I will always remember.
