This was my dad.
At 24, he was dropping bombs on Nazis and earned a Bronze Star for his heroism. The son of Italian immigrants, he went on to build a life of freedom on his own land. He knew how to hunt, fish, build a house, install an engine, and even drive a team of horses.
Though he left school at fourteen to work in the family business, he never stopped learning. He valued reading deeply and knew more about art and history than most of my high school teachers.
But more than anything, he was a loving, present father. We went to bed every night knowing we were safe, protected, and deeply loved.
Looking around today, I realize how rare that kind of presence is—and how lucky we were. I cherish every memory of the time we had together. His love and his lessons live on.
