“I’m an urban planner and I use my skills to interact with the community around economic development, criminal justice change. I’m organizing this marketplace of ideas and taking that intellectual capital into the community. A lot of times, it is troubleshooting. When we have really serious issues, it is my job to find out what’s going on: interacting with law enforcement agencies, dispelling rumors in the community. Sometimes we even have fun.”

-Flores A. Forbes

Flores A. Forbes is an associate vice president for Community Affairs with a focus on urban planning, economic development, entrepreneurship, community development and criminal justice change. Flores is our office’s liaison to Columbia Business School and The Center for Justice. He works closely with the Columbia Harlem Small Business Development Center, The Tamer Center for Social Enterprise, and The Center for Justice specifically on the University’s Justice in Education agenda.

We applaud Mr. Forbes’ work to sustain the community as we celebrate Harlem History & BHM.

“My greatest triumphs have stemmed from well cultivated collaborations. Enlisting politicians, rich people, poor people, blacks and whites, I‘ve been able to keep two Harlem houses from being destroyed, one elaborate oaken staircase from being swept away, and saved substantial portions of three significant buildings.”
- Michael Henry Adams

Michael Henry Adams sees making landmarks of Harlem's most important buildings and historical districts as not only morally correct, but vital to that area's economic health. It's Adams' belief that preserving Harlem's natural riches can make it as prosperous as any business strip in the city. Adams’ successes include saving the Audubon Ballroom and Theatre.

We thank Harlem resident and history enthusiast Michael Henry Adams for his commitment to the preservation of Black history and art as we celebrate Harlem History & BHM.

Tait, a University of Pennsylvania-trained Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Harlem Commonwealth Council, Inc., its subsidiaries, and affiliates from September 2004 until September 2020, when he retired. “This is a family business, this is a legacy, and it’s something I feel is important to the community…I want to elevate the fact that just like people need food for their bodies, children and people need books for the soul.” - Dawn Martine

Dawn Martine opened a literacy center in 1999 where she was teaching parents how to work with their children, how to home-school, and how to give their children extra help. She began selling books, educational games and toys. The center then became Grandma’s Place @grandmasplaceharlem .

Martine is a resource for the Harlem community. She runs parenting workshops on how to get children involved in reading, how to read to children, and how to think in terms of getting children to do homework. For teachers, she teaches what types of homework you should be giving them, how to talk to children, and how to answer children’s questions.

We thank Ms. Martine for keeping the children of Harlem entertained, educated and nurtured as we celebrate Harlem History & BHM.

“We told people that Harlem Stage was a success story and we wanted to keep this institution for artists and for the community alive. So many of our institutions are precarious, even in the best of times.” - Patricia Cruz

Patricia Cruz helped to raise over $26 million to renovate the Gatehouse which became the new home for Aaron Davis Hall Inc., and was rebranded as Harlem Stage in 2006. She also expanded programming at @harlemstage , introducing Uptown Nights, and Harlem Slide and commissioned numerous artists including Jason Moran, Vijay Iyer and Stew, while serving thousands of students annually and collaborating with a number of nonprofits including Harlem School for the Arts, Repertorio Espanol, Manhattan School of Music and Carnegie Hall.

We thank Patricia for maintaining Harlem Stage, a jewel that represents the possibilities in Harlem as we celebrate Harlem History & BHM.

“There’s nothing to identify us as the master builders. So we wanted to make certain that we established something that 100 years from now, black youth could come through the area, even if it has turned totally white, and they could see some semblance of black involvement.”

-Walter Edwards, CEO, Full Spectrum of NY, LLC and Founder & Chair of the Harlem Business Alliance

Mr. Edwards’ leadership has guided Full Spectrum to be recognized as a national leader in the development of affordable green/smart buildings in emerging urban markets. Full Spectrum’s 1400 on 5th Avenue and Kalahari Condominium developments in Central Harlem, are among the rated mixed income developments found in any emerging urban market in America. The two projects provided nearly 400 units of green workforce housing in an otherwise overlooked market.

We thank Mr. Edwards’ work to sustain the Black community in Harlem as we celebrate Harlem History & BHM.

“I think Harlem is the most special place in this country. Wherever you go in America you will not find a community that is better known than Harlem – whether it’s for history, politics, music, etc. So if you know there’s people of color who live in America, you’ve heard of Harlem.”

We truly believe this quote from Lloyd Williams, the CEO of the Harlem Chamber of Commerce, chairman and co-founder of Harlem Week, member of the executive board of NYC & Company and vice-chairman of Harlem Arts Alliance.

Lloyd is not just the crux of political, social and economic issues in Harlem, he’s also a teacher and role model. We applaud Mr. Williams’ contributions and dedication to Harlem as we celebrate Harlem History & BHM.
