For a century, no one knew why 5,200 perfectly aligned holes stretched across a hillside in southern Peru.Explorer Robert Shippee photographed the formation from the air in 1933, and National Geographic ran the images — kicking off decades of theories, from defense to fog capture to ancient astronaut speculation. None of it held up.In 2025, a team led by archaeologists Jacob Bongers and Charles Stanish used drone mapping and soil analysis to study what was actually left behind in each hole. Before the wheel ever reached South America, the Incas built 40,000 kilometers of road across it.They called it Qhapaq Ñan — the Royal Road. It ran through six of today’s countries, from Colombia to Argentina, climbing passes higher than 5,000 meters and crossing deserts, rivers, and rainforest. And they built it without iron tools, without horses, without a written language. Just stone, bronze, human hands, and an empire’s worth of organization.The road carried everything. Relay runners called chasquis could move a message 240 kilometers in a day — fast enough to bring fresh fish from the Pacific coast up to the emperor’s table in Cusco while it was still good. To span the gorges, engineers wove suspension bridges from nothing but mountain grass.Almost all of them are gone now. But one still stands: the Q’eswachaka, rebuilt by hand every June by the communities who have never let the tradition die.You can still walk stretches of this road today.
