Did you know that thousands of birds travel from as far as Iceland, Scandinavia and Siberia to spend winter on our Sussex coast? 🦆

Over the coming months, we’re exploring a wilder side of Sussex by the Sea, sharing some of the incredible wildlife, nature recovery projects and outdoor experiences waiting to be discovered across our coast and countryside.

And we’re starting at RSPB Pagham Harbour (@rspbpaghamharbour)

Every autumn, thousands of migrating wildfowl and wading birds arrive at the reserve to spend the colder months feeding and resting before making the journey back to their breeding grounds.

Among them are the Dark-bellied Brent Geese, with around 3,500 spending the winter across the reserve. These incredible birds travel in family groups and can be spotted feeding on the saltmarsh at low tide and in the surrounding fields at high tide.

Over the next two weeks, RSPB Pagham Harbour is taking part in the Great Coastal Birdwatch, with free pop-up sessions where you can learn more about the birds visiting our coastline, with telescopes and identification guides to help you along the way.

And there’s more to look forward to! On Saturday 21 November, from 10am to 3pm, the reserve will be celebrating the arrival of the Brent Geese with a free family-friendly event featuring trails, games and craft activities.

Whether you’re a keen birdwatcher or simply curious about the wildlife around you, it’s a wonderful opportunity to get outdoors and discover something new.

Remember to stick to the footpaths and give the birds plenty of space to feed and rest during their winter stay 🪶

There are signs of autumn starting to show at Hotham Park 🍂

Although with the sunshine still making an appearance, it feels like summer isn’t quite ready to leave us just yet.

The trees are beginning to change their shades, conkers are appearing beneath our feet and even the squirrels are making the most of the fallen leaves 🐿️

It’s one of those lovely times of year where you can see the seasons changing around you.
And with Hotham Park Café open all year round, you can watch the park change through every season, with your favourite coffee in hand ☕️
