A little slice of downtown Lexington

The Kentucky Castle in Versailles Kentucky, outside Lexington. A real castle built by a man for the love of his life. Sadly, he never saw it complete before he died. Much tragedy fell upon him and the castle over time, including divorce and a fire during the renovations. Today, it boasts 12 luxury suites, a library, game room, ballroom, music hall, gardens, tennis court and a bourbon room of course. It is beautiful and was the perfect way to end our trip - with a massage and lunch.

We spent a day at Keeneland racetrack in Lexington, which was gorgeous! Founded in 1936, it’s a track like no other. People get dressed up to tailgate, suits, dresses, hats - it was fun to get fancy for a day! It is the largest place in the world for selling thoroughbred horses at auction, and many Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont winners were purchased here.

Bardstown by night - the perfect home base to explore the Bourbon Trail of Kentucky.

Castle and Key distillery was built in 1887 by Colonel E.H. Taylor after his travels through Europe, where he was inspired by the castles and sunken gardens. Prohibition closed the distillery in 1920, and after changing owners several times it was abandoned for 60 years. It was purchased by an attorney who brought it back to its splendor after 4 years of restoration. In addition to bourbon, it’s well known for its gin and vodka. The grounds are beautiful, with modern technology blending with the historic feel of the architecture. 754 solar panels were installed across the 20,950 square feet of property.

Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles Kentucky is only one of three Kentucky distilleries that is designated a National Historic Landmark, is the official bourbon for the Kentucky Derby, and the only distillery operating traditional copper pot stills for triple distillation. Glenn’s Creek runs through these peaceful grounds and supplies the water for the bourbon. Ask anyone in Kentucky what makes the bourbon so good and they all point to the water! The limestone buildings housing the barrels were built in the 19th century, but bourbon has been distilled here since 1812. We were there for Woodford’s 30th Anniversary which made it quite festive.
