From June 1 through August 31, New York City recorded 66 murders, 195 shooting incidents and 249 shooting victims. According to the NYPD, all three figures were the lowest recorded for a summer, with the previous records being 78 murders, 227 shooting incidents and 293 shooting victims.

The numbers are preliminary and can be revised. They also describe specific crime categories rather than every type of crime. Overall major crime was down 6.6% in August compared with August 2025, while year-to-date murders were down 24.1%.

These rolling barriers use polymer rollers mounted between steel rails. When a vehicle hits them, the rollers spin and convert some of the crash energy into rotational energy while guiding the vehicle back along the road. South Korean rolling-barrier systems have been tested at speeds up to 100 km/h.

The idea is to reduce the severity of a collision compared with a rigid barrier. Research on rolling barriers in Korea found that the system could cushion impacts and help correct a vehicle’s direction after hitting the barrier

In 1947, Kix cereal offered the Lone Ranger Atomic Bomb Ring for just 15 cents and a cereal box top. The ring contained a tiny amount of radioactive Polonium-210 and worked as a miniature spinthariscope. Looking through its lens in darkness allowed children to see tiny flashes caused by alpha particles hitting a zinc sulfide screen.

It sounds completely insane today, but atomic science was a cultural obsession after World War II. Around 750,000 children reportedly sent away for the ring, which was advertised as a “seething scientific creation.” The Polonium-210 eventually decayed away because of its short half-life, so surviving rings no longer produce the original flashes

@1x.technologies humanoid robot “NEO” was on Andrew Schulz podcast recently.

During the episode the robot brought the hosts Sesh pouches, opened a water bottle, and even joked with them live on set.

Moments like this make it clear: humanoid robots entering the home may be closer than most people think.

The trick is that there isn’t a universal “strongest” design. Each shape moves forces through the structure differently. Trusses like A use members mainly in tension and compression, while the arch in C carries loads largely through compression and transfers significant forces into the supports.

The actual strength depends on the materials, dimensions, connections, span, supports and the loads the bridge is designed to carry. That’s why engineers don’t choose a bridge shape simply because it looks stronger. They calculate how the forces travel through every part of the structure.

Jupiter’s moon Io has some of the most extreme mountains in the solar system. The tallest known, Boösaule Montes, has been estimated at about 17.5 km high, while Mount Everest rises about 8.85 km above sea level.

What makes Io even crazier is how these mountains form. Io is constantly squeezed and stretched by Jupiter’s gravity, generating enormous internal heat and intense volcanic activity. As lava repeatedly buries the surface, huge sections of the crust are compressed and pushed upward, creating mountains that can tower over anything on Earth.

Apple’s Magic Mouse has had its charging port underneath the mouse since the rechargeable design launched. Even after Apple switched the Magic Mouse from Lightning to USB-C, the port stayed on the bottom. Apple’s own support page confirms that the Magic Mouse cannot be used while charging.

The weird part is that Apple designed the Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad so they can still be used while charging. The Magic Mouse is the odd one out. Apple has reportedly worked on redesigning it, but the bottom-mounted port has survived for years.

Scientists have developed a new measure called the Accumulated Dangerous Heat Index to track how temperature and humidity combine to create prolonged dangerous heat. Their analysis found that these conditions have intensified, lasted longer and expanded across parts of the Northern Hemisphere.

The important part is that the study does not say Earth is about to become completely uninhabitable. It found that some regions are already experiencing increasingly dangerous conditions, with certain areas becoming difficult or unsafe for human life during extreme heat.

Apple’s Fifth Avenue store is famous for its obsessive attention to detail, and apparently even the fire extinguisher had to fit the aesthetic. A nearly invisible door in one of the stainless steel columns opens to reveal the red extinguisher inside. The store’s current design was developed with Foster + Partners and Apple’s design team.

The Fifth Avenue store was completely redesigned and reopened in 2019, with Apple emphasizing clean materials, hidden systems and a minimalist interior. The hidden extinguisher is one of those tiny details most visitors would probably walk past without ever noticing.

This is called a telescope ranch. Facilities like Starfront Observatories in rural Texas host hundreds of privately owned telescopes under extremely dark skies, away from the light pollution that makes astronomy harder in cities. The telescopes stay on-site while their owners control them remotely through the internet.

At night, the roofs roll open and the telescopes can automatically track objects in the sky while their owners are thousands of miles away. Starfront says its site has Class 1 dark skies, and reports say some of the equipment is worth tens of thousands of dollars.

A USB drive uses NAND flash memory, which is non-volatile, meaning it can retain information even when there is no power connected. Your files are stored by changing the electrical state of microscopic memory cells, rather than keeping them powered like RAM.

That’s why you can throw a USB drive into a drawer, forget about it for years, plug it back in and still find your files. The catch is that flash memory does slowly lose charge over time, so storage life depends on things like temperature, wear and the type of NAND used.

In September 1960, J. Robert Oppenheimer traveled to Japan and lectured at Kyoto University. This photograph shows him at the blackboard surrounded by equations and diagrams from a physics lecture.

What makes the photograph so striking is the history behind it. Oppenheimer had directed the Los Alamos laboratory during the Manhattan Project, and fifteen years later he was standing in Japan, teaching the next generation of physicists. The image feels almost impossible to separate from everything that happened before it.
