Guettez l’appel...

Sometimes, you are too exhausted to take pictures of the crowd but you never forget the bats. We got tons of Uroderma bilobatum at Simla the other night, along with other stripy stenos. Thanks Asa Wright and Rupert for the lime and bat time 🦇 it's always so special to net there in the history of Trinidad conservation.

Hibernating bats for a change! Along with other researchers from @isem_evol @cnrs and their collaborators, we spent two days brainstorming about the mysterious Quercy fossil bats of the phosphatières, a project led by Maëva Orliac @caussesduquercy Bonus, finding extent ones! The first two are grand rhinolophes, and the last one petit rhinolophe who found a very private little room. When used to tropical bats, it's so special to see hibernating species in deep sleep. Special thanks to Thierry for hosting us and teaching us caving!

Sturnira parvidens, a little fruit bat with a short face.
This one was ready to get her saliva taken for further amylase analyses before being released! Fun fact, these bats have glands that give them such a distinct smell. And look at that face!

Mistnetting with a view in Belize 🇧🇿
-
As the Lamanai fieldwork led by Brock Fenton, Nancy Simmons and the AMNH team is so big, we set up a lot of misnets every night. Around the high temple a team set up the macronet, the triple high and many other misnets. Overall, we caught 50ish bats last night. A lot of projects are going on: some bats are pit-tagged and released, others, recaptured from previous years are recorded, and every group has their own project so there is always so much going on.
-
In fact, especially year after year, Lamanai batathon is just like going to a bat nerds summer camp. Damn it feels so good to see y'all! taken in Lamanai Archaeological site by @explorabats
