Walk through history at the Fort Taber-Fort Rodman Military Museum and Veterans Memorial. The museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the Civil War-era Fort Rodman located at Fort Taber Park on Clark’s Point and telling the history of local men and women that served and are serving in the military. The museum has artifacts from every major U.S. war and their collection is ever-growing with personal donations of memorabilia from local service members and their families. Massachusetts & whaling go hand in hand, but there’s one city where that history runs especially deep 🐋 Welcome to the @WhalingMuseum in New Bedford, a museum that dives into the city’s whaling history & the role it played in shaping the region. & this isn’t just a museum where you walk around reading signs, nope ! There’s so much to explore, from interactive exhibits & art, to historic artifacts, massive whale skeletons & stories that bring New Bedford’s maritime history to life. It’s also an easy day trip from Boston, about an hour south of the city, making it a great excuse to spend the day exploring New Bedford. One of my favorite parts was learning about the community itself, how New Bedford grew around the whaling industry & the people who helped shape the city. I especially loved learning about the connections to places like the Azores & Cape Verde, two places I’ve had on my bucket list for a while ! Seeing how those connections helped shape New Bedford & how those cultures continue to be part of the community today made the experience even more meaningful. They’re open daily from 9AM–5PM [ closed on 🦃🎄🎉 ] & you can grab your tickets online or right at the museum ! Admission is $24 for adults & $14 for kids, but there are also a few ways to save ! • New Bedford residents get 50% off • Library Pass Program: 50% off for up to 4ppl • AAA members get 10% off • Retired military members get 10% off They also participate in Community Access Programs, including $3 admission for up to 6ppl with an EBT, WIC, ConnectorCare or Wonderfund card through Massachusetts’ Card to Culture program. So there are definitely options to make a visit more accessible ! New Bedford is celebrating the life and works of author Herman Melville, whose novel Moby-Dick was largely inspired by his time in the city and the 18-month voyage on the whaling ship Acushnet that departed from New Bedford.⁠ ⁠ Today you'll find nods to Melville and Moby-Dick throughout the city, including the Seamen's Bethel, which Melville visited before heading out to sea.⁠ ⁠ 🗓️ Thursday, August 13 through Sunday, August 16, the @whalingmuseum presents Melville in Our Seaport with daily programming celebrating the literary and cultural influence of Herman Melville.⁠ ⁠ 🗓️ On Friday, August 14, Mayor Jon Mitchell will unveil the Herman Melville statue designed by artist Stefanie Rocknak on the grounds of the Seamen's Bethel in New Bedford.
