One of the things we love most about Travelreads is discovering wonderful books that deserve a little more attention. Sofas and Strangers by Ingrid Hedman is exactly that kind of book. ✨

Together with her son and photographer Ylva Bergman, Ingrid sets off on a train journey through Eastern Europe, staying with local hosts along the way.

The real stars of the book are the people they stay with. Through their stories, homes, and generosity, we get a wonderfully personal glimpse into the places they visit. It's a charming, often funny reminder that some of the best travel experiences come from the people we meet along the way.

A lovely discovery, and one we're very happy to share.

A building more than half a mile high. Think about that for a second.

In 1885, Chicago’s 138-foot Home Insurance Building was a sensation — a radically new kind of building that showed cities could begin to grow upward instead of simply outward.

Then engineers kept figuring out how to go higher.

Steel frames became stronger. Elevators became faster and safer. Foundations went deeper. Buildings learned to withstand wind, sway and enormous forces at heights earlier generations could barely have imagined. A few hundred feet became 1,000. Then 1,500. Then 2,000. And today, the Burj Khalifa rises 2,717 feet, more than half a mile into the sky.

It’s easy to become accustomed to skyscrapers. But every once in a while, they’re worth looking at with fresh eyes.

Our latest Travelreads story explores the wonder of the skyscraper — and the extraordinary engineering, imagination and ambition that allowed us to keep building higher.

The Moomins may appear everywhere in Finland, but beneath the lovely mugs, toys and souvenirs are some wonderfully strange and imaginative stories. Tove Jansson filled Moominvalley with forests and islands, storms and long winters, unexpected visitors and journeys into the unknown.

There’s an unexpected connection between those stories and Helsinki’s remarkable Oodi library.

One creates space for curiosity through architecture. The other does it through stories.

Some places have a story of their own.

In place-driven novels, setting shapes the whole human experience: a marsh can be both refuge and isolation; an immigrant neighborhood can hold a family’s history; a town can seem to grow and remember alongside its people. These are three of Travelreads’ top recommendations for travel novels where place shapes what characters endure, desire, and call home.

The story is often the journey.

There’s a particular beauty in watching a journey unfold: the landscape changes, the way forward is uncertain, and new choices arise along the way. Some journeys are chosen; others are forced upon us. These are three of Travelreads’ top recommendations for novels built around a journey, each offering a different answer to where the road might lead.
