Are you excited to meet nobody in the Norwegian nature?

Well, while you technically won’t meet anybody, you will meet something: one of Norway’s hidden nature gems - right here in central Norway.

Sylan is a large mountain area, located just above Røros. The area stretches all the way across the Norway-Sweden border, with Sylmassivet at the centre. The highest point here, Storsylen, is a whole 1.762 meters above sea level, and thankfully it is on the Norwegian side of the border 😉

Sylan is considered a «Sámi cultural landscape», with centuries of South Sámi reindeer herding history in this region. Maybe you will remember our post about «where you can find reindeer in the middle of Norway» - well, that was also in this area!

While hiking, cycling, fishing, and paddling are some of the great summer activities in Sylan, the winter brings fun in the snow, with ice fishing, and ski routes being some of the main attractions.

One of the gateways into Sylan is Stugudalen in Tydal. In the direct area, you will find excellent fishing spots, the mountains in the background, hiking trails, cycling routes, and even the Pilgrims Path passes through.

And the nice thing is: you don’t need to be a hardcore mountaineer to enjoy the nature in Sylan. There are plenty of accessible hikes around, such as Gråsida (roughly 10 km/3 hours). Though, the challenge of climbing Storsylen is also there (22 km).

So what’s next? Renting a kayak? Fishing equipment? Or looking for a warmer place to sleep, than a tent?

BaseCamp Sylan brings together accommodation, activities, and local experiences. They also rent out equipment that you might need during your mountain adventure.

With their unique accommodation - a glamping experience called Sylan View - you can sleep comfortably in the mountains, with Stuggusjøen nearby.

If you are going to explore Sylan, and you wish to do it differently, you can rent a kayak or bike. Rather have someone guide you? That is also possible!

So, maybe you won’t meet people after all - but at least you’ll meet one of Norway’s hidden gems…along with possibly some reindeer! 😉

As the colors of autumn are setting in on Dovrefjell, the musk ox prepares for the coming winter - with Oppdal being a snow (and ski!) paradise ❄️

While the mating season is now coming to an end, the musk oxen now prepare for the snow to come. Their focus these coming weeks is on feeding before winter.

Adult bulls also tend to become more territorial and aggressive during these final weeks before winter. They posture, roar, scent-mark, and might even charge each other at high speed to compete for females.

So, if you are out in the mountains while looking for these giants, don’t forget to give them plenty of space! 😉

During this time, their thick winter coats also develop fully. Fun fact: the woolly undercoat of a musk ox is called ‘qiviut'.

When the snow arrives, the herds of musk oxen usually go to areas where the wind keeps the ground somewhat exposed - making vegetation and food easier to reach, while food in winter is much harder to obtain.

Are you planning on witnessing these stunning animals in the wild? Visit trondelag.com to learn more or book a guided trip with Oppdal Safari to visit the musk oxen up close! ✨️

Buying your vegetables at the place you spend the night? 🥕🥬

If you’re Norwegian, you might already know this. If you attended the Food Festival in Trondheim before as well. Frosta is Trøndelag’s vegetable garden, producing everything from carrots and potatoes to onions and cabbage.

Frosta, located just over an hour north of Trondheim, has a rich history, filled with Vikings, pilgrims, ruins, and agriculture - along with «Frostatinget», one of Norway’s most important pieces of cultural history, which serves as a medieval court of law for the northern and central parts of the country. 🏛

Ready to visit something truly unique? Valberg Slektsgård, a local farm and pilgrims' accommodation, has built a house on their farm, named «Grønnsaksbua».

Here, you can buy your vegetables - only a little distance from where they came out of the ground. «Local food»? How about «Very, very local food»! 🥔

And, ‘Grønnsaksbua’ is open day round, so if you are looking for some vegetables on a day when other shops are closed, when it’s late at night, or whenever it fits you best: you can buy them at any time of the day.

So, next time you are enjoying a meal at a restaurant in Norway: stop and wonder whether the vegetables you’re eating are from Frosta as well! 😉

Norway’s Crown Jewels have returned to Trondheim 👑

Last week, we said our goodbyes and mourned our late king, King Harald V.

When a Norwegian king passes away, the crown and the other Crown Jewels (which are usually displayed in the Archbishop’s Palace in Trondheim) are transported to the palace in Oslo.

After last week’s funeral - the crown, along with the other Norwegian Crown Jewels have been safely returned to the Archbishop’s Palace, right next to the Nidaros Cathedral.

The King’s Crown was originally commissioned by Carl Johan - for his own coronation in 1818. Made of 20-carat gold, and encrusted with both jewels and pearls, the crown has been used in four separate coronations to date.

If you want to learn more, we recommend visiting the Crown Jewels at the Archbishop’s Palace this autumn - with possibilities to view these Norwegian artifacts with a Norwegian speaking guide every Saturday at 1PM and Sunday at 2PM.

For regular visitors that want to see the Crown Jewels for themselves, you can visit from Tuesday until Sunday. Opening times from Tuesday until Friday are between 11AM-2PM, on Saturdays between 11 and 3, while you can see them between 12 and 4 on Sundays.

Geology Day 2026 ⛰️

On Saturday, the 12th of September, Geology Day, also known as «Geologiens Dag» in Norwegian, is celebrated.

This year’s edition is the 22nd time Geology Day is celebrated in Norway.

Trøndelag is a region of significance within the world of geology, with the mining history and caves of Røros and Orkland, geology island Leka, and much more playing a large part in the many thousands of years of history in the region. 📍

On Geology Day, there will be a handful of free activities throughout the region - to celebrate the region’s diverse geological history. These activities are family friendly, so do not hesitate to turn it into a fun day with the kids!

The activities you can attend:

Vitensenteret in Trondheim: for those interested in stones, minerals, and fossils.
Besøkssenter våtmark in Brekstad, Ørland: learn about tectonic plates and how wetlands and animal life have evolved over time.
Limestone quarry in Verdal: visit a limestone quarry and crusher.
Orkla Industrimuseum’s Gammelgruva: explore Gammelgruve, a well-known mine in Løkken Verk.
Tårnbakken Vaskeriet in Løkken Verk: live music and presentations, with a focus on local stones and contemporary art.

Besides these activities, we recommend celebrating the day by visiting geology island Leka - with a landscape that is unique to Europe - or Olavsgruva in Røros, where you can learn more about the copper mining history of a UNESCO World Heritage town. 🪨

Enjoy Geology Day 2026! 🤩
