In 1491, a 14-year-old duchess secretly married the King of France inside a beautiful Loire Valley castle. But there was one extraordinary complication. Well....She was already married to someone else. Her name was Anne of Brittany, and her wedding would help change the map of France forever. At just 11 years old, Anne had inherited the Duchy of Brittany, a largely independent territory coveted by Europe's most powerful rulers. In 1490, she married Maximilian of Austria by proxy, meaning the groom wasn't physically present. But King Charles VIII of France had other plans. Fearing an alliance between Brittany and Austria, he sent his army into Brittany. Under enormous political and military pressure, Anne agreed to marry the French king. And on December 6, 1491, the two were married in a discreet ceremony at Château de Langeais. Anne was just 14. Charles was 21. Her previous marriage had not yet been annulled by the Pope, making the situation even more complicated. But here's where the story takes another extraordinary turn. Their marriage agreement included a remarkable condition: if Charles died without a male heir, Anne would have to marry his successor. Seven years later, that's exactly what happened. Charles VIII died in 1498 without a surviving child. And Anne married the new king, Louis XII, becoming Queen of France for the second time. The wedding at Langeais began a political process that eventually led to Brittany's formal union with France in 1532. Today, you can visit Château de Langeais, explore its beautifully furnished rooms, and see a reconstruction of that historic royal wedding. Behind its fairy-tale towers and medieval drawbridge lies the story of a teenage duchess whose marriages helped shape the future of France. Had you heard the extraordinary story of Anne of Brittany? #LoireValley #ChateauDeLangeais #FrenchHistory #ExploreFrance by @explorewithersilia
Brittany itinerary, part 4: Saint-Malo → Mont-Saint-Michel The easiest day trip from Saint-Malo, and honestly one of the most magical days of the whole trip. Under an hour’s drive and suddenly there’s a medieval abbey rising out of the bay like something from a fairytale ! What I’d do again: 📍 Arrive early to beat the crowds up the Grande Rue ⛪ Climb up to the abbey for those views over the bay 🙌 Take a guided tour for the secret rooms and passages 🌅 Stay for golden hour when the day-trippers leave 🌊 Check the tide times, high tide is unreal Want the full itinerary with timings, parking and where to eat? Comment GUIDE and I’ll send you the link 💌 Missed parts 1–3? They’re on my profile #montsaintmichel #saintmalo #francetravel #roadtrip by @explorewithersilia

Don’t visit Alsace at Christmas… until you’ve read this 👇 The first time I went to Strasbourg for the markets, I did everything wrong. Our hotel was right in the centre and “had parking”… but the whole old town was closed to cars. We couldn’t even get to it. So here’s everything I wish I’d known: 🚗 Strasbourg: don’t drive into the centre. Park at a P+R outside the city and take the tram in. One ticket covers everyone in the car. 🎄 Place Kléber: stay for the Grand Sapin light and music show. It runs every hour from 4pm to 9pm. ⛪ The cathedral: everyone takes the photo outside and walks away. Go in. It’s free, and it felt more Christmassy than any chalet. 🧸 Colmar: it’s busy, really busy. Check the crowd forecast on the official website before you pick your day, and give it 5 to 6 hours. 🏡 Eguisheim: if I went back tomorrow, I’d sleep here instead of Colmar. It’s calmer, cosier, and much easier to find a table for dinner. 📅 The villages: check the market dates before you book. Some only open on weekends, and some close before Christmas. 🚌 No car? The Christmas shuttle from Colmar takes you to the villages. 📆 Coming after Christmas? Strasbourg’s market closes on 24 December, so pick Colmar. 🍷 Keep your vin chaud cup! I have three at home now, and they’re still my favourite souvenir. Want the full plan? My FREE Christmas in Alsace guide covers where to stay, where to park, the quieter markets, and my map of 38 restaurants near the markets that are worth it 👉 Comment ALSACE and I’ll send it straight to your DMs! Save this for your trip and send it to the friend you’re going with 🎄 #alsace #alsacechristmas #christmasmarkets #strasbourg #colmar by @explorewithersilia
