Every street has two lives. I spent an afternoon in Gastown shooting the second one.

The one that doesn’t perform for tourists. The steam, the signs, the fences, the people between errands, the quiet of a cafe chair in the sun. Nobody poses. The street just keeps being itself, waiting for someone to notice.

From the top of Burnaby Mountain on a smoky afternoon, the world below looked like it had it all figured out. Ships gliding slow, hills sitting quiet, the whole city going about its day without a single rush.

Then you walk back down into it; the traffic, the noise, the hurry; and you realize nothing changed. You just saw it from far away.

Distance makes everything look peaceful. The trick is carrying a little of that stillness back down with you.
