Bass River Twp., NJ- Today I decided to switch gears from @northjerseyadventures to @southjerseyadventures since the entire summer has been devoted to North Jersey hikes. The Pine Barrens is absolutely beautiful and my legs especially appreciated the flat terrain. However, you must be prepared for the myriad of mosquitoes. This specific trail in the Pine Barrens led to the ruins of an old paper mill called the Harrisville paper mill. Harrisville was a town built in the late 1800s with about 75 inhabitants. It was formerly known as McCartyville. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by fire. But the crumbling edifice remains. If you have ever been to The Cornish Estate or the Van Slyke castle remains, it is very similar to that. taken in Wharton State Forest by @exploring_abbyy

Arethusa Falls is located in Crawford Notch State Park, within the White Mountains. This is generally regarded as New Hampshire’s highest waterfall. 🥾

The standard hike is approximately 2.8 miles round trip, and most of the hike is uphill. You can make it longer by hiking adjourning trails. The day I went was very rainy and so it was super slippery. The 140 ft cascades almost had a misty look to them.

You can see baby waterfalls such as Bemis Falls and Coliseum Falls leading up to the main attraction. The trail is heavily forested by hemlocks and has plenty of rocks, roots, and uneven terrain, so good hiking shoes are worthwhile!

That country composed in the main of cellars, sub-cellars, coal-bins, closets, attics, and pantries faced away from the sun. That country whose people are autumn people, thinking only autumn thoughts. Whose people passing at night on the empty walks sound like rain…

Part 2: New Jersey has so many arboretums and gardens! Just offhand some of the ones I’ve been to are: Duke Gardens, Cross Estate Gardens, Ringwood’s Skylands Manor, Natirar, Leonard J. Buck Garden, Deep Cut Gardens, Van Vleck House and Gardens, Willowwood Arboretum, Reeves Reed Arboretum, Cora Hartshorn Arboretum, Rutgers Gardens, Colonial Park Gardens, and the Frelinghuysen Arboretum. (Go back and look at my Instagram photos from the past nine years.)

But today was my first time at Greenwood Gardens. The 28 acre sanctuary combines rich history, nature, and whimsy. When you visit here, you truly understand why New Jersey is called the Garden State. The property historically was owned at different times, but most notably by two wealthy families: the Day family, who originally called the property “Pleasant Days” and the Blanchard family. It has evolved a lot since the Blanchard family era. It was their dream to protect, share, conserve, and share the property with generations to come.

This beautiful oasis in Essex County features a cascade fountain, ⛲️ reflecting pools, meadows, laid out new allées, arbors, garden sculptures, and stone structures crawling with moss and ivy. It truly is so enchanting and cathartic.

There are trails both on the property and outside the property in the park that surrounds Greenwood. Be sure to book $15 tickets to get access 🎟️

Some PA spots I visited in fall that I thought were worth the hype. Both Ricketts Glen and Bushkill Falls have a whole trail of waterfalls. 🍂 🍁 Hickory Run is perfect for camping and there are plenty of activities to do in Lake Harmony🏕️

I really want to explore World’s End State Park and Loyalsock State Forest this autumn, but unfortunately, they are so far away.

Some favorites that I did visit that I would love to go back and see during peak foliage:
