Built in 1854, a new perspective was given on this place due to the release of Titicut Follies. It was discovered a large number of the inmates were there long after their sentences were complete. In 1968, over 250 cases of forgotten men were reviewed. Some inmates were there over 25 years, and what was seen on camera, opened the eyes of many state workers as to how bad this facility was. With a litany of patient deaths, this former psychiatric hospital was eventually converted into a Supermax-Prison. It once had been called the largest psychiatric facility in the state and was now used to house the criminally insane and “SDP’s”(S*xually Dangerous Prisoners). The jail at one point had over 9’000 people within its walls and quickly became known as the worst place within the state. From 1854 to 2002 every nightmare imaginable happened here, eventually it was condemned and its doors shut forever. by @exploring_hobo

(August, 2023) Walking through a psychiatric facility once acclaimed for having some of the worst living conditions possible. Patients sat in cold brick rooms, with zero clothing as it made laundry work less cumbersome on the staff. They’d freeze in the cold winters with no bathrooms available. Instead they’d be given steel buckets, being forced to clean it out whenever orderlies came around. Which quite often wasn’t for multiple days on end. Sitting in a cold room naked with no human contact, sleeping next to your own shit for days on end is enough to drive a person crazy. Match that with an extremely unfit diagnosis, and abusive orderlies the place became a living hell. Full of patients acting out, starving themselves, and even exiting life on their own terms. All of this can be seen in a terrifying exposé, made in the form of a black and white documentary film called “Titticut Follies” which is nearly impossible to find. But if you search hard enough it can be found on the internet archives website.

Finally got my camera back after it sat and collected dust in a shitty Alabama police station for months. Sadly I spent the whole time wondering if I’d ever see any of my pics again. I’ve never backed up my SD card cause I’ve never owned a laptop. Quite the wake up call. Anywho, Here’s a beautiful church from Europe :) by @exploring_hobo
