Soho House is taking three floors at the base of the Johnston Building, the 1903 Beaux-Arts building in the Madison Square North Historic District at Broadway and West 28th Street, for its fourth New York House, due in early 2028. The Ned NoMad keeps 120 of its rooms on the floors above, with separate entrances and no shared membership. Members get a Club Bar, a Drawing Room looking onto Broadway, a late-night pantry, a terrace set out of sight, and a room for live performance. The bigger news is two floors and 20,000 square feet of Soho Health Club, Soho House's first gym in the city, with a sauna, a hammam and an ice bath.

New York's Plaza, the 1907 landmark on Fifth Avenue at Central Park South, is about to close its doors for at least four years. The Midtown hotel will shut entirely in January 2027 so its landmarked facade can be repaired and restored, and guests have until January 19, 2027 for a final night or tea. No budget has been released for this round of work, and the Palm Court and the event rooms close with the hotel, and it has not said whether the shops or residences will stay open while the work runs.

Roy Lichtenstein: Like New is now open at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the first New York retrospective of his work since 1993. Roughly 130 works made from the early 1940s through the 1990s fill Floor 5, from Drowning Girl (1963) to Artist's Studio "The Dance" (1974). One room reunites, for the first time, the paintings from his first Pop show at Leo Castelli Gallery in 1962. The show is built around copying: Lichtenstein took pictures from comic books, newspapers and advertising, reworked them, enlarged them and painted them by hand to look machine-printed, and work by Louise Lawler, Richard Pettibone and Sturtevant hangs alongside. Re-created murals include the Greene Street Mural inside and Girl in Window, his mural for the 1964 New York World's Fair, on the fifth floor terrace, visible from the High Line. On view through May 10, 2027, at 99 Gansevoort Street.

The Chrysler Building is about to get a $235 million restoration under a lease that runs for the next 150 years. Tishman Speyer plans to restore the facade and the crown of the Midtown Manhattan tower, upgrade its systems, and redesign its interiors. Below street level, the arcade gains fitness and wellness space, while the 61st floor, marked by eagle gargoyles modeled on a 1929 Plymouth hood ornament, is set to become a lounge with outdoor access, food, and drinks. The ground lease, signed on October 7, comes from Cooper Union, the college that has owned the land since 1902 and is putting the rent toward a return to full-tuition scholarships for every undergraduate.

JW Marriott has opened its first all-inclusive resort anywhere in the world, above the bay of Playa El Jobo in Guanacaste, on Costa Rica's northern Pacific coast. JW Marriott Costa Elena Resort & Spa has 415 rooms, 15 restaurants and bars, and 17 pools that Marriott calls the largest poolscape in Costa Rica. Phiba by DCM led the design, drawn from Sibú, the figure of creation in the Bribri and Cabécar traditions, beginning with a handcrafted walnut oculus over the lobby. Inside sits the Griffin Club, a resort within the resort with its own pool and private stretch of beach, while LaGloria, a root beer stand, honors the nine-seat stand J. Willard Marriott opened in Washington, D.C., in 1927. The 16,000-square-foot wellness area holds Spa by JW, a fitness center and the brand's first Mindfulness House, and rates start at $900 per person per night, based on double occupancy.

Daniel Humm opens Humm today, Saturday, October 10, at 435 Hudson Street in the West Village, his first standalone restaurant in the US to carry his name. It is à la carte and built around a tile-clad wood-fired oven that rises out of the open kitchen, with no red meat on the menu. One centerpiece is a roast chicken for two with a bread stuffing seasoned with lemon and thyme, and a martini cart rolls from table to table. Executive chef Dmitri Magi runs the kitchen. Pierre Yovanovitch designed the rooms in maroon and ochre, down to a burgundy lounge with a mustard velvet banquette under a red light fixture. Francesco Clemente painted the ceiling by hand, there are works by Louise Bourgeois and Roni Horn, and Rashid Johnson made the host stand. Open daily from 5pm. Reservations are released at noon, three weeks ahead, and there is some walk-in availability, particularly at the bar.

Eight US hotels entered the MICHELIN Guide's 2026 Key selection directly at Two Keys, without holding a Key the year before. No US hotel was newly awarded Three Keys, the guide's highest distinction, in 2026. The list runs from One&Only's first resort in the United States, which opened in Big Sky, Montana, in November 2025, to Waldorf Astoria New York, which reopened on Park Avenue in July 2025 after a restoration that turned a 1,400-room hotel into 375 rooms and 372 residences. In between: Cataloochee Ranch and The Swag, sister Relais & Châteaux properties in the Great Smoky Mountains; The Lodge at Primland, on a 12,000-acre estate in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains; The Vineta, Oetker Hotels' first hotel in the United States, two blocks from Worth Avenue in Palm Beach; Solage, built around Calistoga's hot springs; and Beverly Wilshire, at Wilshire Boulevard and Rodeo Drive since 1928.

The team behind Crane Club has opened Bar CC, a cocktail and wine bar at 85 Tenth Avenue in West Chelsea. Harrison Ginsberg, who previously led the bar program at Overstory atop 70 Pine in the Financial District, runs the drinks, the wine list runs past 1,000 bottles, and chef Melissa Rodriguez keeps the food to a short list of small plates, from a Baby Burger to chips with osetra caviar. Laseu Studio and Tao Group Hospitality designed the rooms in velvet, walnut and brass, with a disco ball at the centre of the back room's ring chandelier. Open Tuesday to Saturday, 6pm to 1am, with most tables held for walk-ins.

Hermès just opened its first permanent store in Brooklyn, and it chose a new brick building on Berry Street in Williamsburg to do it. Hermès Williamsburg opened to the public on September 19, and for the opening event the house brought in Studio Boum to design a tablescape inspired by the New York City skyline. The building reads as a collage of five façades, each with its own masonry, drawing on the neighborhood's brick industrial buildings and wrapping a courtyard planted with an American sweetgum tree. Inside, RDAI, the Paris studio that has long shaped Hermès stores around the world, worked in raw brick, gray terrazzo and metalwork to bring all 16 of the house's métiers together on two floors.

Apple Music Hall opens in London on September 28, and the room was built backwards from the sound. The 600-seat hall sits inside Battersea Power Station on the south bank of the Thames, where a 38-foot stage turns to face any direction, including in the round, and 48 speakers wrap the audience instead of stacking at the front, so a set mixed in Spatial Audio arrives the way it was mixed. The architecture comes out of the power station itself: heritage brickwork left exposed, fluted arches, bronze balconies shaped after the building's oriel windows, and a glass wall behind the seats that opens onto the concourse and the river. Two recording and mix studios sit behind the stage alongside wiring for sixteen cameras, so an artist can play a single night and walk out with both the record and the film.

The Hotel Bossert will reopen in 2029 as The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Brooklyn Heights, the brand's first residence in the borough and the fiftieth standalone residence in its portfolio. Louis Bossert, a Brooklyn lumber merchant, opened the corner of 98 Montague Street in 1909, and Helmle & Huberty gave him fourteen stories of Italian Renaissance Revival in cream brick and terra-cotta, with a granite and limestone base, cast-iron balconies and lion's-head keystones. The conversion cuts 375 hotel rooms down to 61 homes, roughly four per floor and mostly three and four bedrooms, in a building that has stood empty for more than a decade. Union Square Hospitality Group takes about 3,200 square feet at street level for its first full-service Brooklyn restaurant, expected around 2028.

Bvlgari just installed its first public artwork in the United States on the High Line. auruBOROS, Urban Memory and Collective Dream is a 33-foot pneumatic sculpture by Plastique Fantastique, the Berlin duo of Marco Canevacci and Yena Young, and it fills the shaded passage where The Standard straddles the old rail viaduct in the Meatpacking District. The work is inflatable rather than cast, so air holds up a mirror-finish gold skin that picks up the underside of the hotel, the grasses in the park's planting beds, and the brick and glass around it. Fabricated in Lübeck, Germany, the coils are not roped off, and the High Line's path threads between and underneath them. It is on view at Little West 12th Street through September 20, free and without a ticket.
