Everything comes from somewhere.

The title lettering for TOITŪ: Visual Sovereignty carries a direct whakapapa back to Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art.

We took the distinctive letterforms from the original exhibition identity, pulled them apart, then reassembled them into something new to allow the film to stand in its own voice while remaining connected to where it came from.

Awesome to see the Toitū: Visual Sovereignty kaupapa get selected as one of the best for this years @bestdesignawards. Magic skills from @extendedwhanau @tyrone.ohia @chelseawinstanley @desrayeveryday and the LIKEMINDS crew. Massive mihi to @nigelborell and all the incredible artist whose ideas and intentions reverberate powerfully out into the world - bold, proud and unapologetically of Aotearoa. https://bestawards.co.nz/graphic/design-communication/extended-whanau/toitu-visual-sovereignty/ by @extendedwhanau

Design is one of those amorphous disciplines that takes many forms, and its effects are wide reaching.

In Aotearoa there’s a lot of it, and to be cheeky for a minute, as a country we punch way above our weight. If you check out this year’s Best Awards finalists, the proofs in the steam pudding.

What I always appreciate in the awards is the breadth of causes that design is lending a hand and mind to. It’s inspiring to see, and we’re stoked to have a few finalists in the mix.

Te Tohu o Te Kura

Kua hua mai te tohu i te pūputarakihi – he tohu onamata, he tohu anamata anō hoki. E hāngai ana ōna āhuatanga ki tō tātou whare tupuna, ki a Tumutumuwhenua; he whare ako, he whare tūhono, he whare tuakiri hoki mō Ngāti Whātua ki Tāmaki.

Nā tō tātou mātanga toi, nā Arekatera Maihi @katztafari , me ngā whānau whānui te tukanga auaha i whakahaere kia puta ai te tohu me ngā āhuatanga o te kura ki tōna ao marama.

Proud to announce that @tyrone.ohia has been elected into Alliance Graphique Internationale @agigraphic As a graphic designer, this is probably the highest acknowledgement you can get globally.

Being the fifth kiwi to be elected, and the first ever Māori designer to join the ranks of esteemed AGI members (many of whom are my idols) is something we never could’ve imagined.

Big mihi to the Aotearoa members for their sponsorship @practisetheory @inhouse.nz @klim_type_foundry @timothykelleher and especially to Dean Poole for the guidance. To everyone who’s worked alongside us at @extendedwhanau over the years, we appreciate you and we wouldn’t be here without your support. He toa takitini.

Toi Tū Toi Ora upcycled purse
Coming at you with that “old flags, new bags” energy.

There’s nothing new about these bags. They’re made entirely from the old Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art exhibition flags that were flying along Kitchener Street outside Toi o Tāmaki Auckland Art Gallery.

Lovingly designed by our studio team @viv__teo and @evacharlt in collaboration with the talented @veronicabartleet The salvaged flags were washed, pleated at one of the last remaining pleaters in Aotearoa, then sewn into shape.

Coming full circle, it was special to have a couple of these bags in the Toi Tū: Visual Sovereignty art auction which raised money to help tour the independent film – about the exhibition – internationally.

Toi Tū Toi Ora upcycled tote.
Keeping the whakapapa flowing. Using old stuff to make new stuff.

These pleated bags are made from street flags we designed for the landmark Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art exhibition back in 2021.

Lovingly designed by our studio team @viv__teo and @evacharlt in collaboration with the talented @veronicabartleet The salvaged flags were washed, pleated at one of the last remaining pleaters in Aotearoa, then sewn into shape.

A useable taonga, and artifact from the time of the exhibition. There are only 10 bags in existence in a purse and tote size.

He Aka Ka Toro.

With these photographs, we were trying to show the relationship between our Māori kōwhaiwhai patterning, the branching vines of our native plants, and the process of innovation and discovery.
