Migration is rarely a singular movement from one place to another. Rather, it is an ongoing process of circulation, translation, and transformation—from wandering seeds to migrating birds to communities displaced by survival, conflict, and possibility. Alongside them travel languages, customs, technologies, and myths, reshaping identities and blurring distinctions between the native and the foreign.

PLATES 3: Conditions of Migration approaches migration as a condition of exchange through which ecological systems, political realities, cultural identities, visual languages and technological landscapes are continually reconfigured. It frames mobility and immobility as intertwined forces that extend beyond physical movement into digital infrastructures and networked forms of communication. In an era where images, data, and capital traverse borders with unprecedented speed while people remain increasingly constrained by geopolitical boundaries, migration emerges as both material and virtual, embodied and mediated.

PLATES 3 is a collaboration between Copyright/Reserved and Related Department (Shanghai-NY) on creative direction and design, published by Page Bureau.

The vibrant Otabi Festival is currently taking place in Komatsu City, Japan. Borrowing the words of our friend Ken from @va_le_ur.xyz :

“The symbol of this festival is the magnificent moving stage called ‘Hikiyama,’ adorned with lacquer, gold leaf, and intricate carvings. On these Hikiyama, local children proudly perform ‘Children’s Kabuki,’ playing a central role in the festival and contributing to the continuation and development of this traditional art form.”

As attached in the last slides are several photos Junji-san from @cyrospace shared with us during our discussions last year, before the publication was conceived. Many people asked us, “Why make this? It’s not even your culture,” they said. We answered: why not?

We see “continuation” as inherently a form of “resistance” — to persist. To be able to celebrate can also be considered a form of resistance: a preservation of the self, especially with everything happening in the world right now.

To celebrate something, to enjoy yourself, to sing, drink, and laugh, is perhaps the simplest way to resist the world as it becomes.

With this celebration, we hope everyone in Komatsu enjoys the festival to the fullest. Sing! Drink! Laugh!

It’s our first time in Australia 🇦🇺 for the Melbourne Art Book Fair at the National Gallery of Victoria (@ngvmelbourne ), Melbourne.

Save the date: Friday, 15 – Sunday, 17 May 2026
Melbourne Art Book Fair is presented as part of Melbourne Design Week, an initiative of the Victorian Government.

The annual Stallholder Fair 📚 (15–17 May) 📚transforms the NGV’s Great Hall into a marketplace of art books, publishing and design. Featuring stalls by local, national and international publishers, with this year’s highlights including the outstanding work of imprints from East and South-east Asia (👀👀), and the Latin America diaspora in Australia.

📓The wider program runs from 14–24 May. Across 11 days, the fair will activate venues throughout Melbourne with book launches, talks, exhibitions, and workshops.

Conformity influences the formation and maintenance of social norms, helping societies function smoothly and predictably through the self-elimination of behaviors perceived as contrary to unwritten rules.

Domestic Disturbance strips down the conformity embedded in our lives, exploring its conscious and unconscious influences. It seeks to release the overexerting pressures of daily life, work, and expectations, and to reawaken the slumbering instinct that lies within each of us.

As designers, we are often expected to maintain and create visual systems that help work run smoothly. Every day, we self-eliminate our wants/our very selves to prevent behaviors that may contradict unwritten rules from surfacing. There has always been an implicit guide when it comes to how to design, where a predisposed state of mind has little room to exist, let alone personal desire.

This publication has no written rules. Designers simply put themselves into the pages, using the medium to explore the contexts and ideas they are drawn to.

For this release, every team member at Copyright/Reserved contributed one piece to the zine. Audiences could then assemble their own folder by selecting the designers they liked for their edition, meaning no two folders were ever the same since each one shaped by individual taste.
