Happy new year / another revolution around the sun! In these dim days of January, I'm reminded of how interfaces hide data, how so much information is concealed from us and cloacked from the every day. What is information if it's understood as worthless, unnecessary, too heavy or complex, trivialised, diluted and dumbed down? And what if that's not an assumption? "The purpose of a system is what it does" (Stafford Beer)

First Light reveals and visualises data collections that would otherwise remain completely unseen, in the dark, resisting "notions of possession and colonisation that often dominate efforts to map or visualise deep space"

What happens to the billions of stars recorded by telescopes but never seen by human eyes? 𝘍𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 pulls them from digital oblivion, slowly and poetically. The “astronomical detritus” is transformed into ephemeral images shown here for the very first time ️👁️

Moustafa Hassan (b. 1991) is a conceptual artist and researcher currently based in Washington DC.

Moustafa works in a variety of media with the hope of creating sustained proximity between otherwise disparate fields of practice, breaking away from hegemonic digital cultures. At present, Moustafa’s engagements include artistic and institutional exhibitions, as well as contributions to writing and collaborations centered around decolonization and creating meaningful and future forward work through image, space, sound, and film.

A nebula of pliable content lights up the screen. Songs and prose float atop Youtube clips of urban weeds, which expand as the visitor scrolls and disperse when touched. New pages of verse break away, released via clicks on visual gateways. Splintered spirals outline the cursor’s movement through space in an effort to appoint the user to lead the piece’s creative dialogue, as poems are formed in tandem. Here, the visitor determines whether 'Prestidigital *67' is a video, a song, a poem, a game or a painting. But why decide?

Prestidigital *67 was built by Theo in response to their engagement with — and attempts to find the symbolic links between — hypertext methodology and the mystical cosmology of Kabbalah. Focussing on the phenomenon of “cross-referencing”, Theo’s interpretation reveals that there is a familiarity in the looping patterns of hypertext’s conceptual schematics and the multicursal narrative/logic of the sefirot geometry: an entity that is as interconnected and integrated as a network or cosmos. As Theo’s interests span poetry, religion and technology, Prestidigital *67 was influenced by both source texts and tangential texts found online.

This work is featured on External Pages from September 12 to December 12, 2023, and subsequently archived on the website.
