Coffee Chat 03: Leander, Co-Founder of Starlife

Hiring someone for physical work usually means relocation, offices, benefits, and long hiring cycles. Leander’s robots need none of that, a real person pilots them remotely from the other side of the world.

We met Leander in Brooklyn and talked about what it takes to put a remote-operated robot on a real floor, then watched one go live at the American Dream Mall.

Key Takeaways:
• Operators control them live from anywhere, working in shifts across time zones, while the robots work floors across cities all over America. Like a video game, except it’s a real job. They raised $3M to scale exactly this.

• The thing actually stopping fully autonomous robots from walking our streets isn’t movement or balance. It’s touch. A robot can see a coffee cup, but it can’t yet feel how much to grip so it doesn’t crush it, judge if it’s hot, or tell a ripe peach from a rock. Weight, temperature, texture: that physical intuition is the frontier nobody has cracked, and it’s exactly why a human still needs to be in the loop.

• Which is why every shift is training data. Each move a human pilot makes teaches the system that missing physical intuition, so today’s human-driven robots are quietly building the dataset that automates them tomorrow.

3 THINGS WE DO BEFORE EVERY FOUNDER COFFEE ☕

We never walk into a founder coffee cold. Here’s our 15-min prep:

1️⃣ STALK THE LINKEDIN (IN A GOOD WAY)
• What they’ve built, who they’ve worked with, what they post about. The more context going in, the better your questions come out.

2️⃣ READ THE LAST THING THEY SHIPPED
• A launch, a fundraise, a podcast, a tweet. Walk in referencing something from this week, not their About page. It shows you actually care.

3️⃣ BRING 3 REAL QUESTIONS, NOT A SCRIPT
• One about the hard part of what they’re building, one about a decision they made, one only they could answer.

The whole point: a coffee should feel like a conversation, not an interview. Do the homework so you can actually be present.

WHO should we caffeinate next? Drop a name 👇

Coffee Chat 02: James, Co-Founder of Build.inc

It takes a real estate team up to eight weeks to figure out where to build a data center. James built an AI that does it in two days.

We visited him and his team in Brooklyn, grabbed espresso tonics from Maru Coffee, and talked about how hundreds of AI agents are replacing months of manual work in real estate development.

Key Takeaways:
• Half the team are AI engineers, half are real estate veterans from Blackstone, Starwood, and Arup. That domain knowledge is baked into every agent.
• Foundation models can’t just scrape zoning laws and power grid data the way they can scrape legal filings. Real estate data has to be earned deal by deal.
• He trained as an architect, designed buildings at Heatherwick Studio, and then decided to automate his own job. From designing buildings to teaching AI how to build them.

Coffee Chat 01: Jarryd Strydom, Co-Founder & COO @ Sandstone

We had coffee with Jarryd Strydom, a lawyer, a McKinsey consultant, and a self-taught developer who got tired of waiting for someone else to fix in-house legal.

Legal teams today have no clear system, no visibility, no leverage. Sandstone is changing that, by building an AI workflow engine that gives legal teams one place to manage work, access context, and make faster decisions.

Backed by Sequoia with a $10M seed round, before they were even a year old.

Key Takeaways:
• AI isn’t replacing lawyers, it’s giving them their time back to focus on real decisions
• Legal is one of the last white-collar industries to be truly disrupted by tech, and that’s why the opportunity is so big
• Lawyers don’t need another chatbot, they need infrastructure, that’s a very different product to build
