This week, Ermias closed one chapter and began another. 💙

He transitioned from daycare and Early Intervention into Preschool, and I don’t think I can fully put into words what this moment means to me.

When Ermias was diagnosed with autism, acceptance was never something I struggled with. Instead, I educated myself. I learned about all the possibilities, the challenges, the strengths, the therapies, the resources—and most importantly, I learned how to meet my son where he was while still challenging him to do all the things people may assume he cannot do.

There was a time when I questioned whether Ermias would talk. I used to wonder, What will his voice sound like? Will I ever hear him tell me what he wants or how he feels?

Before he had the language to communicate what was happening inside of him, his frustration came out through behaviors that were sometimes unbearable. There were seasons when going places felt so difficult that I became a hermit. I stayed home because it felt easier than trying to explain my child to a world that didn’t always understand him.

And now I look at him. 🥹

I look at how much he has learned, how much he communicates, how much he understands, and how far he has come. I am beyond proud of Ermias.

I pray over my son constantly. I ask God to protect him, guide him, surround him with His angels, and place patient, loving, understanding people in his path.

God created Ermias intentionally, and my prayer is that I continue to have the wisdom to nurture who he is, advocate for what he needs, challenge him to reach his fullest potential, and remind him every single day that there is absolutely nothing wrong with being different.

To another parent who may be questioning something about their child: trust yourself.

If you notice something seems slightly different, get your child evaluated. If the evaluation doesn’t find anything but that feeling in your gut remains, get them evaluated again. Early support can make such a difference. Seeking answers does not mean you are looking for something to be “wrong” with your child. It means you want to understand them and give them every opportunity to thrive.

Today, I celebrate not just another year of your life, but the incredible journey we’ve been on together. As a single mom, I knew there would be challenges, but the detours this past year brought have shaped us in ways I could never have imagined. I had dreams and plans laid out for you before you arrived, yet life gifted us a different path, one that includes your beautiful spirit and unique diagnosis.

Through every tear, every meltdown, and every moment of overstimulation, I’ve learned and grown alongside you. You have taught me to redefine what it means to be a woman and a mother. Honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing about you. Your diagnosis doesn’t define you; it simply adds to the vibrant tapestry of who you are.

Ermias, you are my heart in physical form. May this year and all the years ahead bring you Ankh n Maat—life and truth. I pray that God continues to cover you and that your spirit guides you in all your endeavors. You are my inspiration, and I want you to know that you are not just my son; you are my purpose.
